Which I thought was hilarious.

In any event, I'm not particularly concerned about what "lay viewers" (you really do crack me up) think about whether Galadriel is Gandalf's superior or not. People get the level of detail that they are willing to get. People who only watch the films are going to get a superficial understanding of the secondary world "subcreated" by Tolkien, no matter what. People who only read LotR and The Hobbit, but nothing else, will have somewhat of a greater understanding. People who look deeper, will have a deeper understanding. That's just the way it is. I'm pleased to see Gandalf portrayed as helping to inspire the denizens of Middle-earth to fight the rising tide of evil, and to do so in a way that is morally upright. The scene where Gandalf presents Sting to Bilbo is far from being "canon", and Bilbo shouldn't necessarily need to have Gandalf plant the seed the sprouts into his sparing Gollum out of Pity, but I'm very glad to have that scene nonetheless, because it presents the Gandalf that I care about, far more than his pyrotechnics in the Goblin cave (although I like that, as well).
