Les Miz got Make-up, I mean, the realism there mostly came from the leads starving themselves. No matter what you do with a production team, nothing could beat Hugh and Anne's emaciation. And in Hugh's case, of course it was only in his early scenes--he returned to proper weight after that. Costumes, yes..lots of period detail. Maybe too much at times--you can't fault Hooper for not being true to the book!
I'm not surprised Pi got FX. I was, for the first time in my life, totally fooled by an FX. I honest to God thought that tiger was real, and wondered where they got such a great trainer. I was truly flabbergasted to find out that it was CG.
Sad note: the company that produced that tiger and FX, is a tiny company--forget its name-has just filed for bankrupcy a couple weeks ago and just laid off about 40% of its staff. Someone had to come in and rescue the 3 other films it was working on. I wonder of maybe some Academy voters felt more comfortable snubbking a big FX house bc of this fact. I hope that wasn't the case.
Okay, I'll confess--actually the 2nd time. First time was Titanic, when I thought that the dolphins in the "King of the World' scene were fake and ship was real--it was actually the other way around. Those are the only2 times-I've become quite good at guessing CGI!
I can talk about the small Oscars here--my reactins on the big winners are in the thread above. And now--G night folks!
