Tolkien would have been (on the whole) pleased with the LOTR trilogy, particularly the first installment. Some moments would have upset him (Such as Wormtongue speaking Gandalf's lines to Eowyn in TTT film), but I think he would have understood why the filmmakers needed to make the changes and I believe he would have accepted them. However, while I myself love The Hobbit part 1, I do not think Tolkien would have been impressed at all. I think he would have enjoyed the beginning of the film, but Azog and Radagast in particular would have really annoyed him. I don't think he had the opinion of fans that you say he did: I think that he probably felt that most of them couldn't grasp what he was getting at (i.e. they couldn't see beyond the obvious good vs evil thing). Of course no one else could truly grasp it but him: it's his work, after all!
