And i can see why especially after coming to it after the lord of the rings and the silmarillion. If i were to have read them in that order i am sure my opinion of the book and therefore the movie would be different and probably more in line with your thinking. For me the hobbit book was the first 'grown up' childrens book, if that makes sense. It had maps in and for a child loads of words on a page etc - things which perhaps dont really matter but to me as a child it meant a lot and i was too young to pick up on a fair bit of the humour i can clearly see now. For me, it was the best story i had ever read at that age and so i feel it is in some way special - it introduced me to Tolkien's work and without it i would have no passion for reading. Coming at it from that angle makes this more than just a film for me - i wanted it to be amazing in all the ways the book was to my younger self, full of amazement and wonder, action and adventure. It's not that i can't laugh at things or am super serious, it's more just i guess this book means a lot to me even though i now consider it the least of his works, for what it did in the beginning is important and i felt the film should be as good as that. I realise that sounds silly and could never be achieved but everyone can hope for things before the film right? lol. For me Radagast isn't too bad but they just go over board on things which i feel is just PJ's style but it irritates. As someone said - less would have been more in this case. I think one can make Radagast an interesting funny character without doing some of the things they did with him, but then as a child i am sure i would have laughed at those things i dislike now. For my child self, its great, i wouldn't find it over the top or cheesey but to my slightly more adult self, i just find him too much and the little things annoy me with him - goo down his face, stick insect, house in the middle of a tree that grew under it, rabbit sled, cross eyed, poor cgi scene, feeling of underdeveloped subplot. For me those things take away from the good and i just think it was a missed opportunity to take the character in a slightly different way - but i can see the film needed some comic relief and stick insects, going cross eyed, goo on face give that.
