Some thoughts on your thoughts [In reply to] Can't Post

-- Those ponies (horses) are the furriest horses I've ever seen! Are they a particular breed of horse? Or are they just all in their winter coats? Or did they glue hair onto them? As others have pointed out, they're in hairy makeup just like the actors! No one bothered to remember before wanting shaggy ponies that ponies are only shaggy in winter. However, I actually find this degree of shagginess rather excessive: few healthy ponies will actually grow that much hair, even in winter (and certainly never in summer). Ponies (or horses) that shaggy likely have a thyroid problem called Cushing's disease, which amongst other problems means they grow really shaggy hair and never shed. So when I see all those really shaggy ponies, as much as I would rather just find them cute, I can't stop thinking they all need some serious vet treatment.
-- The orcs are riding those wargs with no tack. How they heck do they stay on? I did notice then grabbing the hair on the back of their necks but how do they control them? That fur is probably really slippery. I would fall off in a second!

I figure they must all be pretty good riders! I remember the first time I got into something of a horserace riding bareback: before I could do anything about it, my horse and my friend's horse were galloping at breakneck speed and I discovered that the motion of a dead run throws you up on the horse's neck -- if the motion threw you backward, you could grab mane to keep from slipping further back, but the movement is just the opposite. And since you're being thrown forward, you can't haul back on the reins to stop, because that just pulls you up on the neck even more! Naturally, I ended up on my horse's neck hanging on for dear life, and the only thing that saved me was that the dirt road came to an end and my horse decided he'd won the race, so came to a sensible stop on his own. I learned to be a better rider after that! I figure orcs must have a similar learning curve, only maybe if they fall off, they get eaten. Fortunately that's never happened to me. Wink -- That fish that Dwalin eats at the beginning -- is that real? Did he really bite and chew the head of a real fish? At least it's cooked! I know people DO eat those kinds of things (apparently, my Norwegian grandfather liked to eat fish eyes -- eww!) but I wouldn't want to do more than one take of that shot if I were Graham McTavish. Someone asked him about this in a tweet, and he didn't really give a straight answer. Real or not, he manages to eat it with enthusiasm! Mr. Ro gags every time he sees that bit.

-- The trolls really are stupid. Didn't they notice when they grabbed the ponies that they had halters on and were tied to trees? Wouldn't that clue you in to the fact that the ponies' owners might be somewhere nearby? What, you've never known a group of ponies that haltered themselves, went on a trek together, then tied themselves up to trees? Ponies can be pretty unusual in Middle-earth!

-- Are we supposed to think that Azog believes that Thorin can understand the Black Speech? Does he? Why would he? Can Azog speak the Common Tongue? What good would it do to goad your enemy if he can't understand what you're saying? Am I asking enough questions? Thorin's clever and good with words (okay, and we REALLY like to listen to him saying those words), but I have trouble believing he ever learned Black Speech. That can't be a part of basic Dwarf-prince education. Advanced Table Manners; Majestic Hair Tossing; Recognition of Precious Gems; Use of Anvil and Forge (But Only When You're Desperate); Advance Sword/Axe Fighting; Basic Pony Riding (And How To Look Majestic While Doing So); Recognition of Dragon-sickness in Close Relatives; Advanced Techniques in Hair Braiding; -- yes, I can see all of these lessons, but even beginning lessons in Black Speech? Doubt it. Thusly, I figure Thorin's just shocked enough to see Azog alive that he doesn't need any translation; he's going in for (what he hopes will be) the kill regardless of the taunts.

-- Elijah really needed to shave again before he shot some of his scenes. A five o'clock shadow is visible in some of them. Not very hobbit-like.
Clearly a foreshadowing of the dwarves to come.
-- the whole Rhosgobel scene: the spiders are drawn to the house. Why? After the black stuff is drawn out of the hedgehog, the spiders leave. Are they drawn to the Dark Magic? After it is contained in the blue crystal, do they leave because they can't sense it anymore? This has puzzled me the last few viewings.
No idea. I'd wondered if they just liked the sound of Radagast's spell, and they left when he finished because they lost interest.
-- the first wide shot of Rivendell is, IMO, the worst (most obvious) matte painting of all the films so far. Maybe the giant IMAX screen made it even more obvious but it is SO fake looking. It looked so much better in FOTR. You mean you can take your eyes of the dwarves to notice the view? I spend that whole scene checking out the back of everyone's hairdos. Not often we get to see their backs for that long.

-- those dwarves have to be the worst houseguests ever. Well, they did clean up Bag End very nicely but, in Rivendell, they are burning the furniture! That could be an heirloom from Gondolin!! I am horrified every time I see it. Utterly irreverent, they are. They crack me up there. Nori says in the background something like, "What? It's not like you didn't do it too..." and I wonder if he's referring to breaking up some furniture for firewood. They're so out of place in Rivendell, and I love the way they take wherever they find themselves and make the most of it. They haven't had an easy life but they still know how to have fun when they can. I also like how Thorin's never around for the merrymaking -- we never get to see him let his hair down, so to speak.

-- Oin has to be the worst bird watcher on the planet. He called the thrush at the end a raven -- they are not even close to looking anything alike (other than both being birds). I hope we get to see a "real" raven in DoS, Well, he may not be good, but I wouldn't call him the worst. I've taken lots of clueless students birdwatching, and I assure you that many of them wouldn't even know that there are things called ravens, and things called thrushes, and that both of these things are (very different) birds.

That was fun. Thanks for sharing these! :-)
