...to be works by authors other than Tolkien. I'd particularly recommend Tom Shippey's books "The Road to Middle Earth" and "J. R. R. Tolkien, Author of the Century", Brian Rosebury's "Tolkien: A Cultural Phenomenon", Humphrey Carpenter's "J. R. R. Tolkien: A Biography", and the "Letters of J. R. R. Tolkien" edited by Humphrey Carpenter. And I agree with Magpie that Verlyn Flieger's books would be helpful. Your library should have all of these.
