George Lucas retains artistic control of the Expanded Universe, which covers the novels and comics. Here is a link to Wikipedia about Star Wars; if you scroll down to "Expanded Universe" it explains quite a bit about the novels. In the front pages of each novel there is a timeline placing the books within the chronological order of the movies. Some of the books are standalone, others are series such as The Thrawn Trilogy, The New Jedi Order, The Han Solo Trilogy, etc. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars
Q: Have the novels been relatively consistent with the various authors or do they all deal with independent characters and story lines?
I think there is both, some crossover, others with independent storylines. I really need to ask Mr. the Green when he comes home from work, and get his perspective as the expert, as I have only read a couple.
There it is: dwarves are not heroes, but calculating folk with a great idea of the value of money; some are tricky and treacherous and pretty bad lots; some are not, but are decent enough people like Thorin and Company, if you don't expect too much.
