The casual audience response has been glowingly, very positive. [In reply to] Can't Post

And I think that word of mouth and the genuine enjoyment will help the film overcome much (not all, but a fair amount) of the negative effects of the mixed critical reviews. A facebook friend, who likes Rings but is not a devout follower of the books or lore, just saw the film tonight (a clear indication that he is not as fervent as many here, lol), and he all but raved about how awesome it was. And that tends to be the reaction of many viewers who are neither critics nor lore-steeped, but who simply are open to the genre and want to see a fun, adventure filled, charming film with at least some depth during the holidays. Many critics either went in looking to see The Return of The King and being miffed when they didn't see that, or else looking to find fault on account of some of Jackson's more publicized acts of possible hubris. The vast majority of the theatre audience is just going to see a fun and wonderfilled movie, and The Hobbit meets those criteria.

It just snuck by Les Miz. Django is limited by the R rating, and I think Les Miz is limited as a musical. Everyone I know who has seen it has been amazed it got reviewed so poorly (and many of them also loved the HFR and couldn't understand the bad rap it got). Going back for my 6th time this weekend with another set of friends who haven't seen it yet!

"Hear me, hounds of Sauron, Gandalf is here! Fly if you value your foul skins, I will shrivel you from tail to snout if you step within this circle!"

"Do not be to eager to deal out death in judgement. Even the very wise cannot see all ends."
