I totally agree. Especially after watching (yes, I will admit it) Bakshi's version, I absolutely despised Boromir. He had not redeeming qualities in that film, and when I reread the book, it was hard to imagine him otherwise. (Granted, I was a "bit" younger at the time...) Then I watched Sean Bean's/Peter Jackson's version and it was an eye-opener and no doubt.

I couldn't have said it better than this:

But the movies gave me a character I could like, that actually seemed in an odd way to succeed in showing me Tolkien's intended character better than Tolkien did.

and that "invented" scene is pure inspiration!
