Backlash? [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm not concerned about a backlash because of LOTR...though it may well make some critics less gushy and a bit more analytical about it. Frankly, I think the thing most likely to cause backlash is the addition of the second storyline. Depending on how many of these critics read The Hobbit in their youth, and whether or not they know in advance what is being added to the story, that could come as a shock if it jars their own remembrance of the story. And, depending on the critic, that could bump the review either way - some may be confused or disappointed, others may love the change. I remember Roger Ebert was somewhat tepid in his FOTR review because he read the book once many years before and the movie was not the light little adventure he apparently remembered.

As far as Oscars, I'm not expecting very many, at least for AUJ. If lightning strikes twice and this repeats the success of FOTR, then we may have a better chance of Oscars for the other two. But I absolutely do not expect TABA to repeat the ROTK sweep - that's the sort of thing that happens once. I doubt any of these pictures will get serious consideration for Best Picture, even if they get a nomination. In addition to being fantasy, which has now gotten its historic nod, these look to be more comic in tone, and when was the last time the BP Oscar went to a light or comedic movie? They like dark or at least serious for Best Picture. Nor do I really expect acting awards, except possibly a Best Supporting nod for RA in TABA....but that's a best case scenario if his character and the script display the depth and pathos we're all hoping for. We may well snag the Best Ensemble Cast BAFTA again. Smile

If the HFR 3D goes over well, they will probably get technical awards...at least special industry recognitions even if not Oscars. Effects, makeup, sound and set design are also likely categories. Possibly costume, though not unless the category is soft or Ann Maskrey's designs are sufficiently different to Ngila Dickson's (again, the sense of "more of the same", even if it's very good, will hinder Oscars). Soundtrack should have a pretty good shot.

Anyway, the critics don't scare me. Wink Even if this film isn't a critical darling, as long as it's as good as it's looking now, it will be a popular success, which is pretty good for a sequel trilogy 11 years coming!
