Most publications don't have two separate teams for online and print - you're a journalist writing for a newspaper or magazine, and you write for both online and print. The staff which are losing are the sub-editors; many publications or companies including my own have slashed their sub-editing teams.

As for your Newsweek example - the fact that people have been reading in a shop without buying is exactly what's killed the print editions. If nobody's buying, how is a company supposed to produce a publication? The media is a not a human right, it is a business, and while as a journalist it's frustrating having to write stuff because someone's sponsored I do understand the commercial drivers. Someone has to pay for what we produce, whether that's subscriptions or advertising. If you've been reading Newsweek in a shop without buying you have contributed to the death of the print edition.
