"If it bleeds, it leads"...or whatever the tabloid journo equivalalent of that is. All you say is depressingly true. There's another twist as well. I don't know about tabloids, but I do know that most mainstream newspapers and magazines these days mostly don't generate their own orgional online content, but are are happy to lift a lot of, and use, content from their print arms. And for the most part online "journalists" are paid a pittance compared to print journos if they are paid at all. This is at an advatnage for print pubications b/c their corproate divisions don't have to spend as much on overhead to pay a jurno to generate online content. And with a diminished print readership of course you can cut down on print staff. Currently win-win from their POV. But increasingly online journos are stepping up and demanding equal access to traditonal media strongholds and events to be equally accredited as journalsts, and as their role increses in importance, to be equally paid. So far the ;Old Guard" has vehemently said no. Personally, I'd love to see a happy balance between the two, but as you noted, that may not happen. So what may happen? Take Newsweek.. I don't know about theinternational edition, but as of Jan 1 there will be np print edition of Newsweek. In order to read Newsweek you'll have to pay and arm and a leg (no doubt) to read it online. No more going into a bookstore and being able to pick up a copy and read it without a subscription....bye bye democracy....So what are they going to pay the online writers of Newsweek? ha ha. And this is not even concerning issues such as impartiality or neutrality, where a high-paid print journo has (for the most part) his or her job to worry about,so they can't go too far off the beaten path in terms of reporting outright lies...(theoretically, I am not discussing TV programs.) That's what about the grey area of online that, as of now, troubles me...
