I've never had a problem with it. Story-telling-wise, I think it's easier and avoids the repetition of Gandalf "revealing" himself, though if done right it could've been awesome (think the use of lightspeed in Empire Strikes Back). It also works better visually in terms of Gandalf's objective - he's literally a walking light to guide people without hope. To shroud that would be, I don't know - greedy? Careless? Or just lazy? On the topic of light, it's always fun seeing both this scene and Gandalf's first reveal in a dark room. Maybe that's why there's some slight issues with my eyesight, despite being 20/20.
