Three soliloquys from Les MORDORserables Can't Post

The following three songs / musical numbers / scenes are intended as parts of Les MORDORserables, a retelling of LOTR in stage musical form, set to the music and melodies of Les Miserablesthe stage musical adaptation of the eponymous Victor Hugo novel.

Each one is a soliloquy: Gandalf, Boromir, and Frodo, in that order.

1. Gandalf's Soliloquy:

You Shall Not Pass or The Bridge of Khazad Dum

To the tune of Who Am I from Les Mis

(Int. Night, in Moria, the FELLOWSHIP sees THE BALROG approaching)

GANDALF

Here comes that Durin's Bane,
I knew it at a glance.
The Shadow and the Flame,
Now run while we've our chance.
The Bridge of Khazad Dum,
Then Dimrill Gate anon,
We need to get there soon,
Our way out to the sun.

If we flee, we'll stay hunted.
If we all fight it, they'll be dead.

I am the wizard, the Fellowship leader,
They all look to me.
How can I let Frodo be part of this fight?
I cannot let be.

If we flee, we'll stay hunted.
If we all fight it, they'll be dead.

Here am I
To tell this demon of the ancient world,
This Balrog from the deep, from Morgoth's fold:
You cannot pass this point while I
Can breathe, I stand until I die!

Here am I!
A wielder of the flame of fair Anor,
Who serves the Secret Fire that burns so pure.
The darkest fire will not avail
you, Flame of Udun, sure to fail!

Must they die?
They will if I share this fight with them,
How could I ever face myself again?
Not one of them is up to this,
I'll stand for them at the Abyss,
I'll give them hope where hope has gone
So Frodo's quest can journey on.

Here am I!
Here am I!
YOU SHALL NOT PASS!!! (On "pass", smashes down with staff)

(Duels Balrog, gets pulled, clings to ledge)

Aragorn you'll see them through,
The leader's mantle goes to you.

Now go on,
Fly you fools, go on-n-n-n-n....! (Falls)

2. Boromir's soliloquy.

This next one occurs after Boromir "curses" the Halflings, then, in his anger upon failing to seize the Ring from Frodo, or perhaps more out of shame at what he has done out of desire for the Ring, trips and falls on his face.

(Ext. Twilight Parth Galen, Boromir, lifts his face from the ground. He slowly rises to discover he is alone.)

(To the tune of What Have I Done, also known as Valjean's Soliloquy )

BOROMIR

What have I done, oh Frodo, what have I done,
Become a traitor at night, though walking tall in the sun,
And have I fallen so far and is the hour so late
That nothing remains but the cries of my hate.
The cries in the dark, Frodo's no longer here,
I drove him away, my curse rings in my ear.

Damned if I'll let my City fall!
Damned if I'll fail my father's call!
We hold the East and its forces at bay,
Isildur's Bane might have saved the day.
And I knew that our Doom was at hand,
When the Halfling came forward to stand.

Yet why did I allow the Ring
To hold dominion over me?
This fevered dream that I have fought for,
It twisted my mind, it took me over.
I would have stayed right by his side,
It was my oath.
I did not feel the grip inside
Until I did that which I loathe.

I'm the pride of his eye,
I'm my father's last hope.
That is all I have lived for,
That is all I have known!

And now the Half-sized little ones,
They need protection by the strong.
Instead I wield my strength against them?
Where I felt was right, it all came out wrong.

Is there redemption for my soul?
How could I know?
What chance might come to prove my worth,
Might there be such a way to go?

(Sounds of Uruk drum beats and battle cries approaching)

I am reaching from my fall,
And I hear Orcs closing in,
It may be the moment now
For repayment of my sin.

I'll return now to the world
To the world of Halfling friends,
Boromir is nothing now,
His shame will come to end!!!

(Draws sword, charges off, exits).

3. Frodo's soliloquy, "The Ring is Mine!"

Frodo has just arrived at the Cracks of Doom, the destination of his epic quest. Sam has stayed behind on the slopes of Mount Doom to fight off Gollum.

(Int. Twilight Sammath Naur. FRODO stands at the brink, alone.)

(To the tune of Javert's (*SPOILER*) , which has a melody nearly identical to What Have I Done a/k/a Valjean's Soliloquy.

FRODO

What is this fear, what is this feeling in me,
'Tis time to throw it away, so that this world can be free,
It is my hour at last to put a seal on its fate,
Wipe out the Ring and wash it clean off the slate.
All it would take is a flick of my wrist.
Triumph at last... but I simply can't do this.

Damned if I'll yearn for a thing that's not there!
Damned if I'll miss its metallic embrace!
I bear the Ring, and my claim is not mocked!
I spit my mission right back in its face!

There'll be nothing at all I can bear
If the precious is no longer there.

How can I allow this quest
To hold dominion over me?
This desperate dream that I have bled for,
It branded my life, it stole my freedom.
I should have perished by this time,
Yet here I stand.
I should be now a wraith or worse.
I have a choice now, like a curse.

And my thoughts fly apart.
Could I have been deceived?
Could this Ring have been given
To its bearer, bequeathed?

And must I now begin to doubt
Who never doubted all these years?
My heart is weak, but now it trembles.
The world I have known is lost in shadow.
What of the shadow if I claim
This as my own?
I've borne the darkness and the pain.
The precious has become my home.

(SAM arrives, having bested Gollum. He listens to Frodo's song in shocked silence.)

I am reaching but I fall
And the fire burns hot below,
As I stare right through the hole
Of a power I've dared to hold.
I've a place now in this world,
With this wheel of golden shine.
There is nowhere else to turn...

(Turns to look at Sam)

...I declare: the Ring is MINE!!!

(FRODO puts it on, vanishes. SAM cries out.)
