I don't think there is a need to see him in full figure and action decimating the dwarves, unless the original expulsion of their folk from Moria is glimpsed. If it is only Azunalbizzar, then I think Dain and or Thrain in Thorin, being terrified into silence in the midst of their victory by the sight of a great, fire eyed shadow beyond the gate, and some brief audio explanation, would suffice. But to dive into dwarf history and leave The Balrog entirely out of it would be malfeasance. You can have all of that, and still not show the Balrog. He works better if you build him up with mystery and suspense rather than just show him. Then his big reveal in FOTR still has meaning. "Hear me, hounds of Sauron, Gandalf is here! Fly if you value your foul skins, I will shrivel you from tail to snout if you step within this circle!" "Do not be to eager to deal out death in judgement. Even the very wise cannot see all ends."
