To me it seems that just like Sauron, it never really cross Gollum's mind that someone would try to destroy the Ring. The sentence said by Gollum: ''Musn't go that way... Musn't hurt the precious'' makes me think that he may perhaps start to realize that Frodo intent to do so. Still, it doesn't necesserly mean that Gollum knew that the Ring could be destroyed for good in this way. But what is clear to me is that he is intelligent enough to know that if the Ring is cast into the lava of Mount Doom, whether it be destroyed or not at any rate he Gollum, has no chance to get it back.
