- that is, I can't recall offhand whether Tolkien used the phrase 'mountain under moon' elsewhere; but he did use a similar phrase in one of my favourite of his Hobbit poems: 'Roads go ever, ever on over rocks and under tree... ...Over snow by winter sown, And through the merry flowers of June, Over grass and over stone, And under mountains in the moon.' (TH, 'The Last Stage') .
