Prisoner of Azkaban was my favorite of the HP movies, for many of the reasons you cite, and I doubt it would have been so successful in capturing the right mood without Columbus' work on the first two films. The only thing I would add is that the last five movies just cry out for the music John Williams would have written for them; he had the soundtracks on such an amazing trajectory, and it was derailed by the changes in composers. Oh, and the Necromancer would win against Voldemort: immortal being vs one desperately trying to be so, the mistakes are bound to be worse for the perverse human. There. A not completely off-topic post.
