I think the first two are seriously underrated. Columbus got perfect casting and the films were brimming with magical atmosphere, the music always gives me goosebumps. Yates films IMO took all the magic and discarded it for a gritty urban edge. Some people like this dark feel, but I find Yates uses visual darkness as a cheap shorthand for narrative darkness. The story gets grimmer so he decides to make the film so gloomy and murky you cant actually see whats going on in the 3D version. But its the magic killing that really makes me irritated. i really wish Cuaron had done the last 3 films. He would have made them visually enchanting and dangerous, and certainly not dull.
