Time wounds all heels [In reply to] Can't Post

I was one of the "ignored" too - not weird enough to invite bullying, but too shy to be cool.

Couple of stories: at my 10th high-school reunion, a girl who had been a geeky artist-type and pretty much ignored by the "in" crowd walked in wearing a bright purple jumpsuit slashed to her bellybutton and 4-inch purple heels, plus spiky purple hair. Turned out she had a very successful business designing album covers for some pretty famous rock bands (that would be CD covers, now), had her own clothing line, and lived half the year in Hollywood and the other half in Paris. By far the biggest success in my class, and she knew it and walked among all the housewives who had been the queen bees of school like they didn't exist.

Another friend told me about the fat girl of the school who showed up at their 10th. She was now thin and a successful model, and she brought her model husband along. Imagine how sweet that moment was for her.

My dad had told me once that there was nothing sadder than someone whose peak experience of life had come as a teenager. Have you heard Bruce Springsteen's "Glory Days"? When I go to reunions, it seems like all the jocks & cheerleaders are clinging to a past that's really a long ways off now. (And they're all fat!) I enjoy listing the various things I've been up to on the forms they send out: climbed Mt. Rainier, sang with a rock band, hitch-hiked through Europe for four months, built a house . . . the next one will say "earned my doctorate" and "diva" and also hopefully "published a book."

Also, we have nothing to feel bad about for how we treated others at that age. I got an e-mail a while ago from our class fat girl who thanked me for being nice to her and said it made a huge difference to her and inspired her to go to college where she had a lot of success. I don't even remember doing all the things she said I did; I think I was just, you know, normal with her. You never realize at the time how big that might be for someone who is struggling.

The way we imagine our lives is the way we are going to go on living our lives.
