Quoted for truth [In reply to] Can't Post

This is what I was getting at here (though your post is a fully supported thesis, mine a mention in passing):

Quote
It really is too early to say. We've seen what, less than a minute of a 20 minute scene? The scene begins with Bilbo at the end of his wits (and the trail he was following), recovering from a bump on the head. Also he was rather more comfortable than humans would be under ground, and upon meeting Gollum was only "anxious" because he wasn't sure of the creature's alignment be it chaotic good, neutral, lawful evil and so on... nah, he wasn't sure if Gollum was a friend of the Goblins or not. Tolkien says nothing about him being frightened by him though. At least not at first.

Keep in mind too that Gollum was trying to appear friendly, at least until he found out more about Bilbo and his sword.

That last line is almost an exact quote from Riddles in the Dark.

Also it is important to consider how Bilbo relates to Gollum when trying to discern how fans will respond to him, and how far removed (or not) either of their portrayals are from the book. Not only does Tolkien say that Gollum was trying to appear friendly, he also says Bilbo was [merely] anxious until he had more time to learn about Gollum.

So at the beginning of their encounter, if an affected friendliness is the ideal for portraying Gollum, and a detached wariness is ideal on Bilbo's part, they pretty much nailed it in the trailer.

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to walk us through the scene Silverlode.
