I think for anyone who only has a passing knowledge of Middle-Earth, Smaug's tiny pagetime relative to his IMMENSE PRESENCE in The Hobbit is honestly disappointing in retrospect, but I think that by somewhat acknowledging that he isn't the climax of the story it will temper expectations and also generate excitement for "OMG WTF ELSE CAN THERE BE" after his demise in the "final chapter."
"The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair; and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater."-J.R.R. Tolkien "Thanks for the money!" -George Lucas
