Frodo....Beren, friend of beasts and birds so help is available in the wild.
Sam....Luthien, has the power of three races and the love between her and Beren will provide great strength to both of them in tough times.
Gandalf....Melian, another very powerful Maia, plus when going on a dangerous quest every girl needs her mum.
Legolas....Beleg, the greatest huntsman ever, look out Mummerkils.
Gimli....Durin I, ummm just because.
Merry....Huor, valiant and self sacrificing for friends against impossible odds.
Pippin....Hurin, for the same reasons as above, plus he was the greatest warrior ever among men, just ask the countless orcs and seventy trolls he slew at TBOUT.
Aragorn....Elendil, Aragorn was noted as being most like Elendil, more so than any of his forefathers. Plus this keeps Narsil/ Anduril in the Fellowship.
Boromir....Faramir, all the benefits, none of the flaws.
Bill the Pony...Rochallar, any horse that would go to the gates of Angband is going to travel wherever he damn well likes in the Third Age. If Rochallar was at the gates of Moria the Watcher in the Water would have taken one look at him and gone back to reading his newspaper or whatever he was doing before he attacked the Fellowship. Also Rochallar gets included just on the sheer strength of having such a cool name.
