I work in post production in television and film, so I have some experience. While I have never seen anything (to my knowledge) in 48fps, a lot of what you see on TV in HD is shot at 60fps. That is why news and a lot of TV shows have that really crisp, 'hyper real' look that people find 'cheap' and un-film like. The frame rate is not the only aspect to filmmaking that gives it that 'filmic' look. You have lenses, depth of field, color correction, production design, etc. All of these things contribute to how the image looks. 'Cheap' TV has a quick, unpolished look because TV has a quick turnaround, and there is no time to perfect the image quality like in a film. I don't think you need to worry that The Hobbit will look cheap or newsy. Having said that, the look will be different and probably a little hard to get used to at first. I think the best comparison we can make right now is to home TVs that have a really high refresh rate. Some are worse than others, but in general the high refresh rates of a lot of modern HD TVs add a smooth, 'TV like' quality to films that were shot in 24fps. I know that The Hobbit is going to look amazing. And the new, less blurry style of shooting (higher frame rates) is probably going to stick.
