Even when I first read The Hobbit as a 12(ish)-year old with no concept, Bard's abrupt introduction didn't sit well with me. I found Smaug's death anticlimactic, and while I've realized now that his death isn't supposed be the climax of the story, it stills seems to happen really quickly and suddenly. It's true that Bard is a mythic sort of character, but The Hobbit is the least mythic of Tolkien's work (not counting minor things like Farmer Giles of Ham, which I haven't read). So I'm not sure how well that fits.
