The thrush's behaviour being a reflection of dwarfish endeavour is a fascinating observation. One wonders which came first? And though the thrush smashes the snail to eat what is inside, the miner smashes rock to possess something. The size of the thrush relative to hobbits and dwarfs would be about the size of a cat to an average man... a crow would be absolutely tremendous in comparison. As the men of Dale used thrushes as messengers, it is noteworthy that this particular thrush acted independently. He was not sent on an errand, as far as we know. He was not simply a spy either. I wonder if or how long this thrush (and his kin) had been waiting to deliver information to a King of Dale that would lead to the death of Smaug? It's as if gathering such information, and delivering it to where it would be most useful was his raison d'être! more to follow...
