A guiding hand [In reply to] Can't Post

Thank you sador for pointing to sources outside of The Hobbit for this exercise. I will avail myself of this board in particular while preparing the discussion on Smaug.

(Just a note, "The Bed of Nails" link leads nowhere. However the 1 Sam reference provided much understanding.)

Regarding "Moneybags," it was meant as a bit of sarcasm on my part. I was not suggesting that was his actual name Wink

Do I detect a much more charitable view of The Master than Tolkien may have intended? I have no sources to back up my inferences about him, apart from a straight reading of the text, especially Roac's denunciation of him to Thorin in favour of Bard (which I highlighted in my notes but managed to miss entirely for my presentation).

In any event, I disagree that Tolkien's comment following The Master's speech was to be taken as praise, unless he counted speech making as the substance of good leadership. Any leader (elected or not) with skill in commerce may prosper his ward when times are good. But the true test comes in times of adversity. I note Bard, and not the Master's councillors (who are mentioned only once I think) was the driver of the town's survival after the attack. Not only did The Master try to escape during the attack, but we are told rather than sharing the treasure gained after the BoFA, he took it and left. The Dragon Sickness may be presented as a kind of spell that many have no natural protection against, but I believe it is also a euphemism for unadulterated greed.
