Open floor plan, and thoughts on "front" room...

I watch a lot of Home and Garden Channel (HGTV) and it seems like most of the younger couples nowadays are wanting the "open floor plan". It has something to do with sight lines, I'm sure, so they can see their young kids and what they are doing when they themselves are in the kitchen, and probably you get the sense of more room and a bigger house that way. Also, they always say they don't like to be separated from company/family when they are cooking. Myself, I'm in your corner AE, and not just separating the kitchen smells from the rest of the house. As for the term "front" room, I expect it stems from the fact that company comes in the main door, which probably fronts onto the street, where the carriages, and later, the cars dropped people off to visit. Hence the sense, only a little in jest, that the "front" room was to remain tidy while the rest of the house didn't have to be. I'm probably wrong about that, but it seems like a good theory. Nowadays, with attached garages that may have a door leading to the kitchen, so as to bring in groceries and other supplies, the "front" door loses its usage.
