A Middle English Vocabulary Challenge
Can't Post
Recently I was moved to consult Tolkien's "A Middle English Vocabulary" as published in Kenneth Sisam (ed.), Fourteenth Century Verse & Prose (With Glossary) Claredon Press: Oxford (1955). Sisam was originally published in 1921 without Tolkien's glossary, the latter being published in 1922. However, though part of the same edition (1955) of Sisam, Tolkien's "Glossary" is listed as printed in 1956. If this is correct, it must have been added to Sisam sometime after his work was published but before both were bound. What moved me? In another thread the word "knaged" was in question and our geordie retrieved a translation from Tolkien's glossary in Gordon and Tolkien's Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (1925) -- mine a less illustrious, though highly cherished 1963 edition ;) In any event, upon checking the glossary in Sisam myself (couldn't find Sir Gawain, but have since) I discovered the word "knaged" was not included. Therefore it appears that to get a more complete view of Tolkien's labours in Middle English, you need more than one of his glossaries. In the preface to Tolkien in Sisam, JRRT says the following: "A good working knowledge of Middle English depends less on the possession of an abstruse vocabulary than on the ordinary machinery of expression..." I thought we might put his assertion to the test, wherefore the challenge. You will require neither glossary mentioned above to participate in this thread. Furtermore let it be known: if you use one of Tolkien's glossaries here, you will be disqualified from the competition and forfiet any credits accrued to that point. A list of 10 words from Tolkien's glossaries will appear in a reply to this post. I leave you to guess or work-out their present form (if any) and/or definition (if it is not immediately apparent). Please, no answers in your subject lines! I will post the answers sometime as seems right, in future.
