but it wasn't meant to be. It was supposed to show that I understood if non Brits couldn't distinguish the different accents and so wouldn't be concerned about it the same way as I am. We have hundreds of accents in Britain - they can change dramatically every 10 miles. You only have to check out comments on the net to see that most people don't recognise them. For instance, I can clearly hear JRD using his own native Welsh accent for a good part of LotR and that this suddenly changes to a Scottish accent. Most people think he speaks with a Scottish accent all the way through. There are already several comments on this thread saying they assumed that ALL dwarves would speak with a Scottish accent when they cast TH because of Gimli. Why not a Welsh one? It's because they just can't distinguish the difference. Another example is Sam in LotR. I think he did quite a good job of doing an English "country" accent and yet I've seen a load of comments where people think he is speaking with an Irish accent. Sean Bean speaks with his own Yorkshire accent but it is a Sheffield-style Yorkshire accent as opposed to Richard Armitage's Yorkshire accent (when he chooses to do it) which is more Leeds/North Yorkshire because that is where his father comes from. I've seen comments where people say that RA is imitating SB because they can't tell the difference and also other comments assuming that SB has an Irish accent because it's not your standard English one. There have been lots of arguments on YT as people listen to the song in the trailer over whether or not the dwarves are saying "moaning" or "mourning". From the text, we know it is "moaning" but I can understand the confusion because they all appear to be singing with a northern English accent where the vowels are elongated. The word could definitely pass for "mourning" if you aren't alert to an accent. This song implies to me that a lot of the dwarves will adopt a Yorkshire accent while others will speak with other accents because they have been "recruited" from all over. This means that PJ can get the actors he wants without the struggle of trying to eliminate an accent - unless it's a Kiwi one, of course, LOL. Billy has a very strong Scottish accent - and a Glaswegian one at that. (The Scots also have a whole range of accents, not an all-purpose one.) James Nesbitt, similarly, doesn't just have an Irish accent but a strong one from Northern Ireland. Their native accents are the only accents that I've ever heard them do (unlike Aidan Turner who has a softer southern Irish accent and can sound quite English when he wants to) and so I'm assuming that it would be difficult for them to change to any other. Sending Thorin on a recruitment drive for his quest would explain the different accents and some of the clothes that they're wearing. But I'll be interested to see if Fili and Kili have the same accents as their uncle - and even if they have the same accents as each other. If they don't, then PJ will be worse than you think I am - just assuming that no-one will notice the difference or even care. And, although I know that we may be offered an explanation (or maybe not - PJ did nothing to explain Pippin's Scottish accent in the middle of the Shire) I will still return to my original point: there are so many English accents to play around with, it's a pity that PJ didn't stick to these for an English mythology.
