PSTD [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm sure Tolkien's war experiences influenced his writings in a lot of ways. Frodo definitely had PSTD and going to Valinor was the only possible cure. And I think he hinted that Eowyn suffered from this when Gandalf was talking to Eomer and Aragorn about her condition. Tolkien did a wonderful job showing the terrible realities of war in the story (which makes me wonder how anyone could misinterpret it as pro-warCrazy). So it was surprising that he completely glossed over Theoden's trauma. I found the events leading up to Helm's Deep very rushed. I'm sure book purists would think this is heresy but the movies had a more realistic portrayal of Theoden so in that area, they improved upon Tolkien. *ducks and runs*

Sith: A while back, you mentioned how Frodo offering the Ring to the Nazgul introduced a Pandora's box of inconsistencies. You're absolutely right that the acting went a long way in covering that up. David Wenham's performance is why I went for years without noticing these things. Seriously, there just weren't enough Oscar slots for him or the rest of the cast. When he said that he finally understood Frodo, there was just something spellbinding about the look he gave him. All I could think of was how they connected. This connection, which is elaborated upon by this essay (thanks for introducing me to that site by the way), is why I still can't help but love this scene. I will say that I thought maybe Sam should have kept the Ring (until they got to Mount Doom of course) when he rescued Frodo from the Mordor orcs but I was not thinking of the Nazgul encounter at all. Rather, it was his unstable behavior throughout ROTK that made me consider that. Sam was the steadiest character in both the books and the films (though Dr Death would roll his eyes at me for the latter point).

To go on another tangent, I've learned from my SCOD discussion on Sam that melodrama seems to be a highly subjective thing. It really fascinates me as to why that is.

Entmaiden: I don't think PJ and co. ever said their script improved on Tolkien either. But the way some people interpret Boyens' defense of certain changes in the Appendices, they believe she might as well have been saying that.
