Duats hits it on the head [In reply to] Can't Post

It's true that in adaptations, some changes are required that work in a book, but wouldn't on film. But there has to be some level of adherence, otherwise, why bother adapting at all (unless it's a cash-grab based on a name)? Jackson, Philleppa, Walsh, Ordesky, Porras, etc., went out of their way to secure not only a cast of good actors, but to find actors that matched the characters. Elijah Wood, Ian Mckellan, Cate Blanchette, Sean Astin, Sean Bean, Viggo Mortensen, even Liv Tyler, really embody the characters they inhabit. McKellan and Blanchette are the definitive actors for those roles, and the others aren't far behind.

So, it stands out when certain actors -- though good in their craft -- are just not right for the parts they were given. Ian Holm and Bernard Hill stand out as being completely the wrong ages. This was not a necessary change to the book, but a bad judgment call on the parts of the filmmakers, who just didn't think those characters through well enough. And as they're both important characters in the narrative, that's a serious misfire. Duat is right when says that the blonde hair and brown goatee are odd, stylistic choicees, particularly when Tolkien describes a 71 year old-man, white haired, white-bearded man. It's also made worse when Gandalf magically restores his youth and gives him a haircut in the process! That's a seriously WTF moment, though you don't notice it initially because of the music, acting and drama of the scene. What's made worse for Hill is the fact that his character is completely changed from the one in the book, so that not only does he not resemble him physically, but he doesn't resemble him in personality. And that's a grave error on the part of the writers/filmmakers. Check out this page for more on the personality change, and why it's so egregious to the film: http://www.istad.org/tolkien/theoden.html.

Ian Holm is a similar issue. You could argue that the ring is corrupting him, which is why he's behaving so eccentrically, but that doesn't account for his appearance, which the filmmakers maintained in the scene where Gandalf says, "you haven't aged a day," and proved to the audience in the flashback scene. Here's the irony. In the new films, Bilbo is a 30-something year old man (appropriately so), so that by the time you get to Fellowship of the Ring, Gandalf's line becomes mockery! Bilbo will be the only character who has aged! (and aged considerably). Gandalf will look the same, as will Elrond, Legolas, Galadriel (and Celebrian if they include him), even Frodo during the bookends, making Bilbo look like ancient troll in comparison to when we last saw him. I'm surprised Bilbo didn't strike him square across the nose for making such an ill-conceived jest as his expense! "Haven't aged a day, indeed!" Honestly, if the filmmakers wanted to retain some integrity to Tolkien, they'd reshoot Freeman in the role, and send Holm an apology.

As regards Gollum, he's 589 years old!! LOL, he actually looks great for his age!
