or, for that matter, a previously published letter by Tolkien is, naturally, a text protected by copyright and, regardless of the source of transcription, cannot legally be printed in its entirety without permission of the rights owner.
The original manuscript letter was reproduced (through the 'grey area' of copyright which allows reproduction or quotation for purposes of sale) and selectively quoted as lot 410 in a Christie's New York auction catalogue of May 2002. The letter was purchased at that sale by Marquette University and is in their Tolkien archive, where we've seen and transcribed it. (The transcription posted by Annael has a number of errors -- not Annael's fault, of course.) We refer to it in the entry for 25 December 1963-2 January 1964 on p. 614 of the Chronology volume of our J.R.R. Tolkien Companion and Guide. To confuse the issue still further, Nancy Smith showed the letter to a writer for the magazine The Diplomat (October 1966) for the article 'Tolkien on Tolkien' -- see our entry for this in the Reader's Guide, pp. 1022-24 -- where comments from the letter were freely intermingled with autobiographical information Tolkien had provided to his American publisher, Houghton Mifflin; and bits from this later appeared (with errors) in The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien, p. 221.
