With Treebeard, I've never noticed this inconsistency before but maybe that's because I was so engrossed in the crawling pace of their moot. Still, it reminds me of people who refuse to see a doctor in real life because they don't want to know they have a problem. And it could be that he didn't know the extent of Isengard's damage. While I see how the Osgiliath scenes harm the story for reasons other than purism, I really don't really get how Haldir being at Helm's Deep and Faramir being tempted by the Ring do that (especially given the flashback the EE). I don't have a problem with those and some book-firsters don't either. That being said, one change that always stuck out to me like a sore thumb was the rangers beating up Gollum. Even before I read the books, that part always seemed pointless. But I have a similar opinion to BRN about the films. Theoden's transformation: I didn't like ambiguity in the book on whether he was possessed or merely deceived. So I don't mind the cartoony nature of the haircut and dye job. Sam's journey with the Ring: The fact that we didn't know whether he had it created a different kind of drama. That (IMHO) greatly made up for the lack of suspense with Frodo. With ROTK, the short answer is that the EE had a lot of good additions but there was also a lot of filler. We get to see more Grond. Yawn. And I'll never understand why Jackson added back extra scenes with the Dead Army when he didn't even like that part of the story. They added nothing to the story and I'm sure there's other stuff on the cutting room floor that PJ liked better and most fans would have been more pleased with. Replace those scenes with more Houses of Healing and I'd be a happy camper.
