It clarifies the age problem.

I tend to see 250 as very old because of this passage (The quest for Erebor):

"But Dáin Ironfoot was a worthy successor. And now we hear that he fell fighting before Erebor again, even while we fought here. I should call it a heavy loss, if it was not a wonder that in his great age he could still wield his axe as mightily as they say he did..."

He was 251 years old.
