I used to think this way... [In reply to] Can't Post

I tend to agree with you about The Silmarillion. I regard it as a research source, not a good read.

Until I finally listened to the complete Silmarillion as read by Martin Shaw. When I finished it the second time, I was unsure if LotR was my favorite read or if this series of connected stories was. It is really a wonderful tale, perhaps difficult to maneuver in parts but ultimately so worth it. Especially when you get to the part about the destruction of Numenor. The description of "the flood" (don't want to get to technical here, cause I don't want to spoil it for you) was almost as clear as a scene from an epic movie, and it is so well written , especially at that point, that it is even thrilling. All jests aside (and the main post about taking two years to read this is a hoot!) I envy someone about to read all that, the kinslaying and crossing of the Helcaraxe for the first time. Unlike most people who love the tale of Beren and Luthien as a love story, I prefer the meeting of Thingol and Melian, and I'm not big on Turin's tale but loved Tuor and the Fall of Gondolin. Yes, there are wonderful reads in that book, IMHO.

Riding with the Rohirrim!
