great! [In reply to] Can't Post

Way too much to report on here, but I can tell you a bit about N.E. Brigand's presentation -- packed with ideas and thoughts about the upcoming Hobbit movies. He talked about different approaches to movie versions of books like LotR, contrasting the views of some critics who don't think that any films or fanfic or other adaptations should be composed of LotR and critics who acknowledge that films are going to be made and that they're necessarily different from the books. N.E.B. mentioned DelToro's posts on TORn which have said that he's going to end the first movie in the middle of the book, told us exactly where the middle of the book is, and questioned where others think it might be. He also mentioned a few TORN regulars and their theories on the upcoming movie. He highlighted some of the problems of a film adaptation of The Hobbit, such as how to film Bilbo's invisibility or the talking animals. These are the points I remember right now without my notes. I don't know whether he found it a bit disconcerting to be mentioning Tom Shippey's articles with Tom Shippey sitting right there in the front row before him, but that's what happened.

The Friday night session, "Tolkien Unbound," is the one that is meant for fun and entertainment. We started off with Eileen Marie Moore singing and playing "The Road Goes Ever On" song cycle by Donald Swann, which was great to hear live, as one piece. Then we had selected readings from Sigurd and Gudrun, followed by the just-for-fun "Lord of the Ringos," led by Mike Foster -- these were LotR-themed songs based on Beatles tunes, and N.E.Brigand once again demonstrated that he has a good voice by performing as one of the singers in the band.
