First off, I don't believe they are fasting (though they are); I believe Tom has a "power" over them--for what reason I don't know. He's keeping them in their seats listening rather than doing anything else like eating. I also find it peculiar that Tom and Goldberry never eat a meal with the hobbits. What do you make of this? The part of Goldberry still messes with my head. "Personally I think she had far better disappear than make a meaningless appearance." (Letter 210). So Tolkien views Goldberry as meaningFUL? What about the episode in the forest? The hobbits are walking along, and the Old Willow sings a song that they can't even hear the words to, and they all get very sleepy and fall asleep, then 2 of them are caught inside the tree. Frodo finds Tom and he's always singing and rhyming (odd to find a man in the middle of the Old Forest, no?). I just find the entire part with Tom Bombadil to be so peculiar. Sorry Finding Frodo! (Sorry I did not reply to HER post!) Yes, you propose a good point of dreams coming in dreams. It seems unlikely that such "explicit dreams" would come about in such an already explicit dream (if that were the case). On Barrow-wight: Tolkien doesn't put much effort into describing this enemy in the story: "Round the corner a long arm was groping, walking on its fingers towards sam." Do we truely know that the wight was still present? The light vanished and he hheard a snarling noise. This could be the sound of a wight "dying" or losing its power over its prisoners? Aragorn son of Arathorn is called Aragorn, Strider (in Bree and by the hobbits), and the Dunadan by Bilbo. and on page 245, when Frodo calls out "Strider! You seem to have a lot of names." Bilbo's response is this: "Well, Strider is one that I haven't heard before, anyway." So it seems that Bilbo has heard him called numerous other names than these three I am aware of. Is this the character you spoke of? And thank you for the welcome and reply!
