Since we have so many TORN folk who are unfamiliar with New York, here are some suggestions for things to do. See Altaira's main post above for all the group activities, including a possible Circle Line tour and visit to Ground Zero. Note that travel time must be considered. NY is a very large city, and moving around will take time! Links: Fodor's: http://www.fodors.com/world/north-america/usa/new-york/new-york-city/ Free NYC: http://www.freenyc.net/ Official Tourism Site: http://nycgo.com/ Subway map: http://www.nysubway.com/map/ NY times Guide (best picks from the Times): http://travel.nytimes.com/travel/guides/north-america/united-states/new-york/new-york-city/overview.html Time Out New York: http://www.timeout.com/newyork/ Trip Advisor: New York City: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Tourism-g60763-New_York_City_New_York-Vacations.html Suggested Activities: Circle line Tour http://www.circleline42.com/site/default.aspx (watch Altaira's post for updates for the group outing) Location and Directions http://www.circleline42.com/site/visitor_information.aspx Estimated Time (inc'l travel time) 4 hours Cost per Person $34 for adults, $21 for children, $29 for seniors Staten Island Ferry - this is a quick, FREE way to see the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island http://www.siferry.com/ Location and Directions 1 South Street, http://www.siferry.com/SIFerry_Schedules.aspx Estimated Time (inc'l travel time) 3 hours Cost per Person - FREE! Empire State Building - www.esbnyc.com Location and Directions 350 Fifth Avenue at 33rd Estimated Time (inc'l travel time) 3 hours but this is dependent on the lines. You can save time by (a) buying tickets in advance and/or (b) purchasing express tickets for an extra fee Cost per Person 86th floor observatory: adults: $20 children (under 13) $14 seniors (62+) $18 Express Pass $45 102nd floor observatory add $15 (can not be purchased in advance) Cloisters - http://www.metmuseum.org/cloisters/ Location and Directions 99 Margaret Corbin Drive, Fort Tyron Park By Subway/Bus
Take the A train to 190th Street and exit the station by elevator. Walk north along Margaret Corbin Drive for approximately ten minutes or transfer to the M4 bus and ride north one stop. If you are coming from the Museum's Main Building, you may also take the M4 bus directly from Madison Avenue/83rd Street to the last stop. (Please allow more time for this option.) Although The Cloisters web site offers the option to take a bus, the natives strongly discourage it and tell me that the subway is the only way to get there. Estimated Time (inc'l travel time) 6 hours (assuming 4 hours at the museum) Cost per Person Adults $20 Children under 12 - FREE Seniors (65+) $15 Central Park http://www.centralparknyc.com Location and Directions. The park begins at 59th Street between Central Park West and Fifth Avenue, and extends north to 110th Street (there are approx. 10 blocks to the mile in NYC) Estimated Time (inc'l travel time) - Approx 1 hour travel time, round trip, plus the time you want to spend in the park Cost per person. Admission to the park is FREE, however some of the attractions like the Central Park Zoo charge a fee. Statue of Liberty http://www.nps.gov/STLI/index.htm Location and Directions Located approx 1 mile from Lower Manhattan, accessible by ferry (the same ferry docks at Ellis Island) http://www.nps.gov/stli/planyourvisit/publictransportation.htm Estimated Time (inc'l travel time) NOTE: If you take a ferry later than 2 pm, you will only have time for either the Statue or Ellis Island, not both. For Liberty Island only, allow about 5 hours including travel to and from hotel. For both Liberty Island and Ellis Island, allow 7-8 hours Cost per person Adult $12 ($20 with audio tour) + $3 for Crown ticket Senior $10 ($17.25 with audio tour + $3 for Crown ticket Children 4-12 $5 ($12.25 with audio tour) + $3 for Crown ticket Ellis Island - millions of future Americans first had to go through Ellis Island. http://www.nps.gov/elis/index.htm Location and Directions Located approx 1 mile from Lower Manhattan, accessible by ferry (the same ferry docks at Liberty Island) http://www.nps.gov/stli/planyourvisit/publictransportation.htm Estimated Time (inc'l travel time) NOTE: If you take a ferry later than 2 pm, you will only have time for either the Statue or Ellis Island, not both. For Ellis Island only, allow about 4 hours including travel to and from hotel. For both Liberty Island and Ellis Island, allow 7-8 hours Cost per person Adult $12 Senior over 62 $10 Children 4-12 $5 Shopping and Neighborhoods South Street Seaport http://www.southstreetseaport.com/html/ Location and Directions Located in Lower Manhattan near the East River at Fulton and South Streets, Pier 17. For directions, go to http://www.southstreetseaport.com/html/malldirections.asp Estimated Time (inc'l travel time) Approximately 1 hour round trip for transportation, plus time spent at the Seaport Cost per person. Entrance is FREE, but of course there are dozens of shopping and dining options, so hang on to your credit card! Soho http://www.sohonyc.com/ Location and Directions. Soho is a shortened name for South of Houston (pronounced Howston, not Hueston). It's a wonderful neighborhood of galleries, shops, restaurants and picturesque streets that's located in Lower Manhattan. http://manhattan.about.com/od/neighborhoodguide/a/sohoguide.htm Estimated Time (inc'l travel time) - Allow approx 1 hour for round-trip travel time on public transportation and 2-3 hours to wander the streets and do some shopping. Cost per person - FREE to visit Fifth Avenue. This is classic NYC shopping and all the big names can be found here. http://www.aviewoncities.com/nyc/fifthavenue.htm Location and Directions. The big shopping and window-gazing is along Fifth Avenue between 49th and 59th streets. It's a fairly easy walk from the hotel. Estimated Time (inc'l travel time) - 1/2 hour transportation to and from hotel, then at least 1 -2 hours browsing time Cost per person - well, it's always free to look Greenwich Village - once the hangout for the bohemian artists and musicians, Greenwich Village still holds some of its old vibe, but now is much more upscale with lots of sightseeing and shopping opportunities http://www.nycgv.com/ Location and Directions Located in the northern part of Lower Manhattan, Greenwich Village is below 14th Street and west of Broadway. It is easily accessible from several subway stations. http://www.nycgv.com/map.asp Estimated Time (inc'l travel time). Allow approximately 1 hour for round trip travel, then 2-3 hours for walking around and shopping Cost per person - FREE Museums for a rainy day: http://nyc.gov/portal/site/nycgov/menuitem.5344998baa00eff6a62fa24601c789a0/ Walking Tours http://www.manhattanwalks.com/?gclid=CPjGhJvv5ZwCFSUMDQodfFb3FQ Location and Directions - tours start at various locations depending on the tour selected Estimated Time (inc'l travel time) Each tour takes 2-3 hours, and travel time should be estimated at 1 hour round trip for each tour Cost per person - Cost is calculated on a group basis and is $90 for a minimum of 6 people ($15 per person). Each additional person is $15
Each cloak was fastened about the neck with a brooch like a green leaf veined with silver. `Are these magic cloaks? ' asked Pippin, looking at them with wonder. `I do not know what you mean by that,' answered the leader of the Elves. NARF since 1974. Balin Bows
