Barrels Out of Bond Part II Can't Post

Poor Mr Baggins - it was a weary long time that he lived in that place all alone, and always hiding, never daring to take off his ring, hardly daring to sleep, even tucked away in the darkest and remotest corners he could find.

How did you feel towards Bilbo's plight? How do you think you would have coped with long dreary days of sneaking around constantly fearing discovery?

Bilbo's described as having a shadow "altogether thin and wobbly as it was in torchlight" whilst wearing the Ring. Would you have thought this possible? Is this an example of the Ring's 'weaker' power at this time?

Bilbo shows his resourcefulness, as foretold by Gandalf, by discovering where each of the Dwarves are imprisoned. Most 'fairy-stories' talk of 'the' dungeon, yet the Professor had the Dwarves placed in cells spread all over the fortress. Why do you think this was? Do you think it adds to the tale? Is it more believable?

Finally Bilbo discovers that there is another way out of the caves and we are given a fairly good description of the water-gate and what it's used for. Included in this is the fact that the portcullis can be dropped right to the river-bed, but, that it's often left open. Why? If this is a fortress and Mirkwood has some very unsavory inhabitants, isn't this rather foolhardy of the elves? Or is it just arrogance?

It is certainly very good news for our hero, as it allows him to devise an escape plan, which we'll discuss tomorrow.

See you then!
