And by the way, this is another issue which should be addressed in this general discussion: How do we make the RR a more welcoming and less intimidating place, without losing the variety (may I say opulence?) of viewpoints the people here have to offer? This was what Kelvarhin and I had been discussing about a lot already and have kept doing since. We both think that even after the recent discussion, the inhibition threshold to the RR is still a bit high for many, no matter how much the RR regulars might try to accomodate their posts. And we don’t want to spoil their fun completely, of course. But it would be sad when nothing would come out of that long debate what to do. So we thought about starting a new style of discussions to draw a few more people to the RR – we would both love to discuss the books, too, no matter how much we enjoy the other parts of the board. A less scholarly approach might encourage people to post there, too, and ease the way in. In RL no one goes straight to University, either, after all And from what we have seen over the last days, we’re not the only ones. We think for the beginning it would work best to have some 'normal' book discussions about what we felt or thought, about special questions that pop up here and there. Maybe something like my first attempt with the ‚Aragorn as a healer’ thread, that went very well, even better than I had expected. They can exist side by side with the usual ones, and I really hope a few more people are participating over time. For the moment, it would hopefully ease the way into the RR for these who still are too intimidated by the ongoing discussions. And I think these two different sorts of book discussions could be permeable and the start of an exchange between both groups, with a bit of good will from both sides. We really can't think of any other way how to do it. We doubt many would be able to keep up with the usual discussions, particularly not at first, when everyone is shying away from the RR. But maybe these less structured threads might help to get people there, and they might lurk at the scholarly threads and have a few ideas for them, too, then. And the RR regulars might have something to say from time to time about our discussions. Over time, both groups could perhaps learn from each other. So we want to just encourage everyone to start new threads about interesting details – there are so many out there!
I do not suffer from LotR obsession - I enjoy every minute of it.
