Flat Mode vs. Threaded Mode [In reply to] Can't Post

Sometimes posting in Flat Mode can mis-place your reply and burry it deep within a sub-thread of a sub-thread of a sub-thread... that can happen here. The consequences are: you may miss people responding to you and it causes confusion for everyone because you reply most likely won't make sense in response to who you are replying to. Wink

Just a few helpful hints...
The Boards at TORn do NOT work exactly the same as other boards do. We have two viewing options: Flat Mode & Threaded Mode. When people first register to TORn, their Default Settings are automatically set to Flat Mode. However, Flat Mode can be problematic.

Most of us read in Threaded Mode and occasionally switch to Flat Mode using the Flat Mode button on top of board. Of course you can find your own way that works for you once you understands how it works. Here are some hard-earned tips:

Tips:
1. SETTINGS BUTTON:
You can change the setting at the top of the board by clicking the button that says: Threaded Mode or Flat Mode (depending on which mode you are in, it will say the other one… it's a toggle button)

2. CHANGE YOUR DEFAULT SETTINGS: Recommended Way!.
This will make the boards appear in Threaded Mode every time you visit the boards automatically (by default) instead if Flat Mode. On the top of the board, second Gold Ring from the left —
Go To>> Edit Profile>> choose Display Settings :: Change "Default Post Display" setting Menu: from Flat Mode to Threaded Mode>> click Save Settings (bottom right)

How I do it (for example only), I have my default settings set to Threaded Mode and when I need to for long threads, for instance, I click on the Flat Mode button at the top for that thread. I don't like to reply in Flat Mode however, because it is hard to tell exactly where it will end up. Often gets replies put in the strangest places. You can find what works best for you, but it is good to know what your options are.

— Advantages of reading in Threaded Expanded Mode is that it all laid out in an outline so that you can actually see who is responding to who and what their topic is. And you can be assured that your reply will land to whom you actually want to reply to.

3. FOR MAKING REPLIES:
When posting in Flat mode you need to realize exactly which post you are trying to. The best thing is to post reply in Threaded Mode, then there is no confusion. If reading Flat Mode (sometimes the occasion calls for it), and you want to make a Reply, here are your options:

A. REPLY TO THE ORIGINAL POST:
1. IN FLAT MODE: Scroll up to the Original Post and click the Reply Button to the right or the Title Heading of post. — Notice that it all lines up: User Name, Title, Reply Button… that is how you know that your are making a reply to whom you intend to reply to.
2. From FLAT MODE To THREADED Quickly: Scroll up to the Original Post and click on the "Shortcut" link under the Users Avatar. That takes you immediately to that specific post in Threaded Mode.
3. REVERT to Threaded Mode by clicking the button on top says Threaded Mode>> then click on the original post and then post you reply in that mode.

B. REPLY TO A REPLY:
1. IN FLAT MODE: Go up to Title Heading of the Post and click the Reply Button to the right or the Title Heading. — Notice that it all lines up: User Name, Title, Reply Button… that is how you know that your are making a reply to whom you intend to reply to.
2. IN FLAT MODE: click on the "Shortcut" link under the Users Avatar under the User Name. That takes you immediately to that specific post in Threaded Mode. And it avoids all confusion. The Advantage is it's all laid out under the post in outline form who Is saying what to whom.
3. REVERT to Threaded Mode by clicking the button on top says Threaded Mode>> then click on the post that you want to Reply to by clicking the Reply Button to the right of the Title.

MORE HELPFUL TIPS on topic:
• [In Reply To]: link found next to the title of the post you are reading.
This is useful when reading in Flat Mode or in any long thread in any Threaded Mode. You can click on and it will take you to the post that the post you are reading is replying to. Otherwise, it gets hard to figure out what someone is even talking about.

• Look under the Post Reply window Box where you are writing your response at the Message and User Name… this will tell you who your response will go to is to.

• Hit "Quote Button" to the left of the Reply Button in Flat Mode or in any Long Thread so that a reader can know what your reply is in response to.

• A Slash or Double-Slash or {nt} at the end of a Title means the is No Text inside the post so no need to open it.

We all went through this last year when we changed over to the New Boards.
Hope this helps. Best of luck and welcome to TORn!
