So I was explaining yesterday to a young acquaintance that Tolkien fans, on the whole, are also people who read other books for pleasure and who read more books than the average non-Tolkien fan. Do you think that's a sustainable argument? when I read "The Jane Austen Book Club", and one of her discussion questions at the end was about the fact that Jane Austen fans and science fiction fans seem to form groups and want to talk about the books, and she wondered if there were any other authors that provoked that kind of reaction. I thought, well, yeah.... ;-) I don't know about your argument, but I wouldn't be surprised. Years ago I ran across a woman wearing elf ears and asked her if she was a Tolkien fan. She said "Oh, I loathe him. He uses too many words." (!) So maybe those of us who think Tolkien doesn't use too many words are comfortable with reading lots of words in general. btw, how's your knee coming?
