News story: Amazon and Film Commission planning Lord of the Rings release until days before pin pulled on NZ production

This NZ Herald story is behind a paywall but the key points are:

* Amazon was working with the NZ Government on a marketing strategy for the Lord of the Rings TV series until days before Amazon abruptly pulled the plug on filming season 2 in New Zealand.

* Amazon met virtually with the Film Commission, the Ministry for Business, Innovation and Employment, and Tourism New Zealand in early June to discuss a way to promote the series for New Zealand tourism.

* At another meeting in mid-June, Amazon said it would shortly share a "strategic marketing plan" for the New Zealand side to review for opportunities for Tourism NZ to co-operate with the film-makers.

* On July 27, both sides agreed to meet on August 17 to plan their global marketing campaign, with NZ wanting to leverage the TV series for tourism marketing. On August 14, the day after Amazon announced it was walking away, an executive emailed the Commission "respectfully" cancelling the meeting.

Also, from the news article:
Communications between the film's producers and the film commission reveal that Amazon had called the film commission to raise its "concerns" with two "deliverables" in its agreement with the Government. The first was a "cultural immersion session" for significant cast and crew on the project, and the second was a "Media famil experience" - it is not clear what this pertains to, or if either of these events took place.

What the....?

Surely Amazon's concerns weren't a problem with the work/process so far! Is it a power play? Or is Amazon really more concerned about tourism activity in NZ with Covid concerns?

It's a drama series, fersher... but keep the drama on the screen and get the job done!

I suspect, with little to back it up,

that the inflexibility of our isolation/quarantine system for everyone coming into the country is the reason that Amazon looked elsewhere. (Amazon asked to be able to run its own isolation system using private homes for selected people, which the Government declined.)

The irony is that we're about to start 'bespoke' isolation for approved businesses who have people who need to travel overseas. Bad timing all round.
