*Throws Open Door* It's Fiesta Friday!!!!

HEY! I get to play Barkeep today! Our lovely Altaira *fondly waves* has been waylaid by RL demands, so Bilbo and I have snagged the keys, bar towel and blender. ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK!

Yes, Bilbo is still hanging out with me after our tr.... Oh, that's something we'll talk about later when I finally finish my write-up on visiting fair New Zealand in March. *sigh* I'm homesick for that lovely land already. I promise I'm working on about 7,000 pics and report and will unleash it on you as soon as I can :)

In the meantime, how are you doing? What's your week been like and what are your plans for this weekend? DO TELL! That goes for your beverage of choice, too ;)

Only 7,000 pictures?

Laugh! I don't know HOW you're ever going to select, I bet each and every one is a treasure! Can you close your eyes, breath in deeply, and imagine you're outside the door at Bag End? Heart

A blender! Hm, what would go well with...snow? Tongue Yep. It's supposed to change to rain in a couple of hours. Could you blend up a mocha frappe for me, please? The family took me out to dinner last night for my "Beatles Birthday" (half the folks I tell that, have no idea what I mean!). I love being 2-to-the-sixth years old! Laugh

7,000!

Not too shabby. Laugh Looking forward to the report.

Sneaking in on time for once (!) at work. Oh hmm, if the blender is coming out--could I order a milkshake, please? My mom made me the best milkshakes by throwing ice cream in her ancient blender, which probably wasn't good for blending normal things but made a perfectly thick milkshake.

Ready to sleep in this weekend, since I didn't get to last weekend because of that (wonderful) hike. A friend is throwing himself a birthday party at a karaoke bar, so that should be interesting and fun and weird, even though that's not really my vibe. Hoping to make some progress on a couple of creative thingies this weekend.

We had a little earthquake here yesterday (5.3). A few shaky seconds at the office, but nothing fell and no one was hurt. I thought it was just in my head, and my body was saying "look, you *need* to eat lunch, dude." Angelic

Have a great weekend, everyone!

I'm so glad you had such a great night :) You're family definitely realizes what a treasure they have in you!

You're so right in closing my eyes and being right back there again. I still can't believe it happened. I'm afraid going through the nearly 900 pics I have just of Hobbiton will be very slow. I keep stopping and revisiting every moment :)

I hope you have a wonderful weekend, m'dear!

Birthday greeting, bottle of wine?

That is such a classic song!

900 of Hobbiton alone! And the best part is...it will never leave you, and you'll never leave there, no matter where your feet take you. Cool

Thanks, gramma, you have a splendid weekend also!

All shook up, eh?

Wink How many have you experienced out there, now?

My Dad would make milkshakes using Mom's electric mixer! He'd scoop in chocolate ice cream and milk and set it on "low" so it wouldn't spill all over. No store could ever make milkshakes the ways our parents did!

Enjoy the weekend, cats. Going on another hike?

I'm still getting used to daylight saving ending. And I could have sworn you wrote 'eat your own flesh' rather than 'enter at your own risk'. *rubs eyes*

It's been an intense week at work with two big launches yesterday and not enough time to prepare properly for either of them. I've been very much looking forward to this weekend. Smile

Happy end of the week, everyone!

My Complete Recordings arrived today!

Very excited, except I have to purchase a turntable Cool. But I wanted the "vinyl" as the young people call records because I have so many good memories of listening to music this way. I still have my old albums, but gave away my turntable years ago.

Here's a bad picture:

I'd love to know

if you can tell the difference between the music on records compared to digital.

Where would you buy a turntable these days? Will you need to hunt out a specialist store?

Turntables

Actually turntables have become a bit popular again with the renewed interest in vinyl recordings. It should be easy to pick one up at Walmart or Target.

I did a triathlon yesterday.

First leg: a 5km run
Second leg: 15 km kayaking
Third leg: a fish-and-chips lunch :)

April, and *still* warm enough for kayaking! A cold snap is predicted this week, though.

Planning to work (i.e. do some writing) over the weekend to make up for bunking off yesterday. Also planting some beans, and fussing over the tomatoes, which are continuing to bear well.

Wishing everyone a pleasant weekend.

Much as I love

the long evenings, I was well and truly ready for DS to end. I generally get up for a run about 6 am, and it's been pitch dark! It does take a while to get used to the night coming on so early, though. Or, as I like to say, "it gets late early" :)

Enjoy your well-earned weekend!

Inexpensive ones are all over the place.

You can get Crosley or Victrola record players at Target or Wal-Mart, in a variety of cases.

I have a system with a Marantz turntable, a music CD read/write unit, and a cassette read/write hooked into a Denon receiver. You can hear every snap, crackle and pop on the records! Laugh

That was the little doohickey that we would stick in the middle of our 45s so we could put them on the spindle. They came in handy if you lost the accessory that actually fit over the spindle to accomodate the 45s.

a bit like that for CD singles back in the 80's, except it was like a doughnut, and you put the CD in the middle. But we didn't need doohickys for vinyl 45's here - they were the same in the middle as a 33.

Late again...

Still wet here, though at least it's not freezing; we had a glorious spring day on Thursday, and now - splat again. The garden is sodden.

My son-in-law (late 30s) is very into his vinyl. I bought him a picture frame into which you can insert an LP cover, which is proving very popular. Some of the cover artwork is gorgeous - he likes showing off his signed ones too!

Looking forward very much to seeing some of your Hobbiton memories online, Gramma! Remember the days when we had to put in the roll of film very carefully without letting any light in, take the pics, send them off or hand them into the shop, wait for them to come back, pay for them and just pray they'd worked out? Digital photography is wonderful!

It's a day for tea and simnel cake (bought on offer just after Easter, not made, though I have attempted it in the past!) so I'll raise my gardening-themed mug to you all and hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend. Cheers!

Puppies with Tolkien names and Finalists, oh my!

Hi everyone! Gramma, you when to New Zealand last month?! Shocked Jealous! I do hope you'll share all the pictures! :D

I had every intention of making a visit to Fiesta much sooner than now, but some happy things have happened that took up all my attention!

First of all, my family adopted a 2 month-old lab puppy on March 28th. The shelter thought she may be mixed with something else because of the teeny bit of white on her toes and chest, but short of a DNA test, nobody actually knows what the mix may be...if there even is one. The internet says even pure-bred labs occasionally have random spots of abnormal color and so far, other than those bits of white, she looks and acts pure lab.

Here's some pics from the day she came home. The shelter called her "Midnight" but we changed her name to "Melian" or "Meli" for short. https://www.instagram.com/...n-by=efbuckleswriter She looks quite small in those pics, and she was...but she's gained about 4 lbs since then and her body and legs are already longer. Here's a more recent pic: https://twitter.com/...s/981941455911604224 During her first vet appointment on Thursday, the vet predicted she may end up being 75 lbs when she's all grown up. Good thing we've had big dogs before. :p Da beagle is slowly getting used to her and they're interacting more and more and occasionally getting close to playing. I am also finally getting used to her energy and personality and she's very smart and doing well with the training we've done with her already.

The other bit of news is related to that Snow White retelling anthology contest I said I entered. The contest results were announced on March 31st and while I didn't win a spot in the anthology, I was a Finalist! My name and story (Moonsilver by E. F. Buckles) is listed as a Finalist on the official website. http://www.rooglewoodpress.com/writing-contest The feedback I got was good as well. There were seven sections on it worth five points each where the judge scored me on thing like plot, grammar, voice and stuff like that, and I got 56 of 60 points. Of the few things they said needed improvement, all were things that I'm sure giving the story some breathing room will help fix, so looking forward to working on that in the coming months and eventually finding a way to get it published.

That's all the news I have. :) I hope everyone is doing well and has a good weekend!

I have seen

...pedigreed Labs with white chest blazes and leg spots. To Lab purists ( I am not one ) this is "an undesirable trait," and they often sell these puppies at less than their "pure" littermates, or even discard them, Heaven forfend! These dogs are just as sweet and trainable as any other Lab. Enjoy your adopted puppy! :)

How silly!

I am definitely not a lab purist either, and the idea that a little extra color makes them undesirable or less pure somehow just...just...it makes me want to blow flames like Smaug.Mad

Oh yes, I am definitely enjoying her! She's a sweetheart. Mischievous too, but still sweet. ;)

Ah, that'd be why.

But we didn't need doohickys for vinyl 45's here - they were the same in the middle as a 33.

PUPPY!!!! :D

She's SO SWEET! and what a great name :D There's nothing like a puppy (or kitten) to just melt your heart.

I've been to the pound a couple of times in the last couple of weeks looking for another sweetheart doggie. There were 13 dogs... 10 pitbulls and 3 rotweillers. *sigh* College towns. No thanks ;) I'll keep watching, though.

Congratulations on your finalist spot! The experience really helps get you farther down your writer's path. The input is worth the effort :) I'm so glad you're happy with the experience :D

YES! I made it to Hobbiton!!! I'm still pinching myself! I'll definitely get those pictures sorted out asap!

Have a wonderful weekend!!

Have you tried the websites of local shelters?

These days, so many shelters put dogs in foster homes. It may be worth looking at their websites to see if there are different ones featured there than what is at the physical building. Since we wanted a puppy specifically, we never even set foot in the actual shelter until we'd met Melian at the foster home, agreed that we wanted her, and *then* went to the shelter to sign the papers and take her home.

Heh, I understand saying thanks, but no thanks to certain breeds. One puppy we almost met before Melian seemed like it could have been the right dog...until we found out from the foster that it was half bloodhound. LOL, nope! Bloodhounds are sweethearts, but they're really drooly, and we couldn't have provided it the running room it needed, especially not with that need to follow its nose.

Thanks! And, looking forward to those, pictures! :)

Every once in a while

...a friend offer\s to take me to a shelter to replace my late, great Golden. But I guess it's too soon or something. I just can't make myself go, cause I know I will fall in love, and it will begin all over again Frown

Aw. *hugs*

As someone who has lost a special dog friend before, I understand completely. Sometimes getting a new dog can help with the grief over the old one, but if you're not ready yet, you're not ready. There's no shame in that. Cry as much as you need to, talk to someone about the special memories of laten great Golden. Do whatever you need to do to let the hurt out in healthy ways and give yourself as much time as you need to heal. If and when you're ready for another dog you'll know.

Extra *hugs*.Heart

I hear ya

My sweet Puddifoot has been gone 2 years now. I love having a dog around... simply because they'll eat my cooking ;)

No... there's nothing like the companionship of a good dog. But you have to wait until you're ready.

I had no intention of getting a dog when I found her. I was leaving the theatre after watching number buhzillion of The Battle of Five Armies when my truck turned left towards the pound instead of right towards home. I was chastising myself the whole way, but went in anyway. I walked through the kennels and there she was at the end on the right. She's got border collie and sheltie in her. Like you said... I fell in love. All the other dogs were barking while she just sat there and watched me.

I want to get my next love from the local pound. They really need the support, plus it just feels good. The right one will be there, just like Puddi was. The worse thing about having a pet is that they don't last our lifetime. I have friends who lost pets and will never get another one again because of the heartbreak. But, imho, to go all that time without that unconditional love and acceptance is worse on my heart than the loneliness of doing wthout. Plus, any pet I've ever had that I rescued (stray or pound) KNOWS you saved them... and there's forever that special connection.

In fact, when I took Puddifoot into my vet to get checked and shots, the receptionist stared at us when we came in. Like she saw a ghost.
[paraphrasing]
"Is that your dog?"
"Yeah. I just got her from the pound."
"Omg! I saw that dog running down the middle of the road during the morning rush, dodging cars and looking so scared. I tried to stop, but it was just too busy and I was going too fast! There was nowhere to turn around... I felt so horrible."
"Really!?!"
"Oh yeah! That's her! I thought for sure she'd get hit! I"m so happy you have her! That's GREAT!"

:) You never know. The right one will be there. We've just got to be sure to turn left instead of right when the urge hits. ;)
