In exchange for the Riddle-

I'll give you an answer-

I must say you guys solved my, perhaps, ill-conceived riddle quite fast (I'm ashamed, actually) and got the date and times right. Nevertheless, the powers of red tape extended the process for hours and days longer.

But now its all done-

I'm confirmed and signed as the HOBBIT (SES) and I hope to join your community form this day forth-

Now I''ll go and have a second breakfast to celebrate!

Yours Truly

GDT

Welcome to Middle-earth!!!
I'm so happy that a director has been assigned to "The Hobbit" and sequel! I just watched Pan's Labyrinth, it was quite good, and I feel really good about you directing these movies!!! I also am very happy to see that Weta will be involved, seeing as that they played such a huge part in "The Lord of the Rings". Any ideas yet on actors for the role of Bilbo? Keep us posted! The fate of Middle-earth rests in your hands!!!

Theres some good in this world, Mr. Frodo, and its worth fighting for.

Welcome to the board Guillermo! After a months of thinking about having you as director I've found myself unashamedly celebrating like a lunatic. I am very excited to see how you plan to depict the spiders and Smaug, and of course bringing Middle Earth back to life again for the fans. Please know that I am behind you all the way.

I'll be going to see Hellboy 2 as soon as its out.

Fantastic!

Couldn't be happier to have you be the director, Guillermo. I am confident you'll have as much fun making this movie as we will enjoy just hearing about the progress towards what should be two terrific movies. That you're working closely with the original team (Peter, Fran and Phillipa), moving to New Zealand for four years and responded very honestly about your thoughts regarding these films brings great credibility to the gigantic fan base for these movies. Welcome to the wonderful world of Tolkien, Mr. Del Toro....

The doorway to dreams just opened...

Welcome aboard Guillermo!

I've been crossing my fingers for it to happen ever since your name was mentioned and today comes as a relief for me and many others.

I wasn't sure about the future of "The Hobbit" when it was announced that Peter couldn't direct due to other commitments. After all, he is the man who drove the whole trilogy from initial skepticism when it was first announced (and despite my longtime admiration for his early movies, I was among the skeptics!) to just plain awe when he delivered the movies unto the world.

I never dared to confront my "dreams" about the book to the dry reality of pictures and sounds, and yet I immediately got the class of feelings that belong to dreams when I stood in front of the silver screen.

And I believe that's exactly why you fit perfectly as the director for those two new movies. While I'm not fond of all your previous movies, I always noticed how dedicated you were to your work, how every details were fleshed out and each movie had its own soul. That's something highly respectable in nowadays volatile industry, where movies become more like products than art.

Furthermore, I value "El Espinazo del diablo" and "El Laberinto del fauno" as masterpieces of their own, perfect kaleidoscopes of fairy-tales and the bleak reality of our world. I am confident you will succeed in your new quest and overcome all the difficulties that lay ahead.

All my good luck wishes to you! And if you ever come to doubt the value of your choices regarding the movies, don't forget to refer to good old Professor Tolkien and his writings for advices. Let the books guide you to the world of dreams... Most of the riddles you will have to solve in your forthcoming work, were already solved by him ! (And no, I'm not talking about that riddle game thingie in a deep dark cave ;-)

Greetings from France,

Wilfried

will you have moderated Q&A?

"Nevertheless, the powers of red tape extended the process for hours and days longer."

indeed.

Will Mr. Del Toro ever have Q&A with the site?

What about stuff he's not sure about? I mean we've been analyzing this stuff for years.

by which I mean: one of the things that stands out for me is that Peter Jackson himself said in the DVD commentary "I had absolutely no idea what an Ent should look like". And he got really worried that it would be a nightmare, but then a Weta guy just jumped in and had a sketch which was EXACTLY what they ended up using in the films;

more importantly, should we do a "straw poll" of the audience asking what prequel scenes we'd like in the Appendix movie? by which I mean: I myself would like to see a few scenes showing the backstory of the Rohan characters, Theoden, Eowyn, Eomer: but some people never even think of this. Will they include backstory stuff like that?

THANK YOU, Mr. Del Toro! Elen sila lumenn, omentilvo!

And remember, in the words of Sam Gamgee's gaffer, the hardest job is the one that's not started yet!

I have all but two

I didn't get the limited release Peter Jackson Hobbit figure

and I don't have the Mouth of Sauron because he wasn't sold separately....and I wasn't going to buy 4 figures I didn't need

I've got like 75 of these (don't panic: 5 years worth of birthday and christmas presents, like 3 for birthdays, 5 for christmasses)

oh I don't have each alternate version of "Legolas...with knives!" "Legloas....with skateboard!" "council Legolas!" etc. and alternate hobbits (ugh) I've got the Coronation set and Armored Merry, Armored Pippin, etc.

(I don't have "every one ever made") but I do have "every character they ever made a figure out of"if you follow me; this includes Hama and Gamling)

I even used as stuffed elephant for my Mumak Commander to ride on (I should load a picture one of these days, but the shelf I have them on is a total mess)

But now we'll look forward to: Thorin & Co, Misty Mountain Orcs and Great Goblin, **Wargs again, ***Great Eagles and Gwaihir figure? Beorn?! In giant man AND Bear forms? Thranduil? Great Spiders of Mirkwood? Bard? Dain? Smaug?

****Plus, they might actually finish the action figures they had IN PLANNING for the LOTR line before the pulled them; such as Rosie Cotton and Quickbeam.

Again, "Welcome, welcome!"

To our community indeed, and thank you for taking on this wonderful (and daunting) project. I know you will do a job worthy of The Professor's works, and a worthy follow-up to the trail Peter, Fran and Philppa blazed. I know that whatever imprint of your wonderful art you put upon Middle Earth, the results will be truly magical!

You will give us something glorious and beautiful, I know it. Bein Suerte, God bless, and I know we're all in for a grand adventure!

Hurrah! And there was much rejoicing!!

Guillermo, thank you and congratulations! Thank you so much for honouring us here with your presence, and for sharing this news with us - and congrats on that most wonderful of jobs! Here's to the journey that you will be taking there and back again! We can't wait to start that journey with you. And I'm so glad PJ, Fran et al are involved - it wouldn't have been the same if they weren't going 'back again' too! Safe travels, happy landings in NZ (whenever you go) and have fun on this greatest adventure! We're with you every step of the way (and I mean every step - TORnsibs are persistent folks!) Wink

The GdT Express is in the station...

...time to go for a ride! :)

Hola Guillermo!

It was still snowing where I live just a week ago. But with the news today, I know that the sun is out and Spring has finally arrived -- it's a wonderful day to just step out of the front door and see where the road leads to. :)

To be honest, 6 to 9 months ago I wasn't quite in your camp yet. I still had hopes for my own personal dark-horse candidate, Terry Gilliam. But I did my homework. I watched your movies. Saw some interviews and read the statements you've made about your views on story and myth wherever I could find them. And read, with delight, the hard work you've already done recently immersing yourself in Tolkien studies; this despite the hectic schedule you must already have set for yourself. (Actually, watching folks like yourself, PJ, Spielberg, Lucas, Gilliam, Ridley Scott and others, I've come to the conclusion that directors are either not human or are completely insane!) Well, I stand converted. Not only am I in your camp, but I think my shoes are on fire! ;)

Some credit for that goes to many of the regulars here at TORN who have been backing you since before I ever even knew there was a race. Thanks to them for helping me see the light. And thanks PJ, and Prof. Tolkien, for..., well..., the Moon, the Stars, and everything else that makes Middle-earth real in our hearts and minds!

Welcome, Guillermo! Pax.

Woohoo! Time to celebrate!

Congratulations on getting the job, Mr. Director! Cool

Even though events interfered with your riddle, we love that you posted it here and gave us something to speculate about. It's clear that you're our kind of people! For the next few years we will be happy to buy your (virtual) drinks at Fiesta, provide endless opinions and theories and feedback and enthusiasm, and debate every hint and rumor and bit of news with gusto. Ah, so much to look forward to! Laugh

They have become like the things which once attracted us by their glitter, or their colour, or their shape, and we laid hands on them, and then locked them in our hoard, acquired them, and acquiring ceased to look at them.
Creative fantasy, because it is mainly trying to do something else [make something new], may open your hoard and let all the locked things fly away like cage-birds. OH HAPPY FRABJOUS DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cool Dear Guillermo,

WOOHOO!!! HeartHeartHeartHeartHeart

You are a prince among directors, a wizzard of cinematic art, a fan's dream come true.

As a huge admirer of your films (ever since Cronos), I was thrilled when your name was first floated as director.

Back in 2007, when PJ made the announcement that he would be The Hobbit's executive producer, I had fantasized that you or fellow amigo Alphonso Cuaron might be at the helm. But I figured that's all it was, a dream. With the acclaim for Pan, plus knowing you had the new Hellboy coming out, not to mention the fact that you were being courted for HP, I wondered if you'd even be interested in such a long term committment. Moreover, given the debacle of The Golden Compass, I didn't think I could stand to see first rate fantasy material in the hands of a second rate director any time soon again. So many disappointments when big studios are involved, yet I allowed myself to hope.

When it appreared you were interested, I could hardly contain my joy. Two of my favorite filmmakers, working together, to bring a cherished book to the screen. Doubters be damned! Indeed I spent more than a few minutes in this forum encouraging everyone who hadn't already done so to go out immediately and rent The Devil's Backbone and Pan. Your fans here, as you likely already know, did quite a bit of serious hand holding at TORN!

I know from past experience that no director is more respectful of or generous to the fan community than yourself. I'm sure you already know that you won't find a more opinionated, enthusiastic, or dedicated group than Tolkien fans. I know that you will weather this project with grace and charm, and I have every confidence that your films will be extraordinary. I can't wait to see the unique personal vision you'll bring to The Hobbit movies. I am content at last.

How well I remember the anticipation and tension as we waited for casting and production news from PJ's LOTR - has it really been almost ten years? Such sweet agony it was. Now we get to take the journey AGAIN - this is even better than a month of second breakfasts!

This middle aged lady is doing a happy dance, wishing you well on your journey, knowing that something truly special awaits at the end.

HAPPY DAY HAPPY DAY HAPPY DAY HAPPY DAY HAPPY DAY HAPPY DAY

A valid question, yes

And I didn't mean to 'snuff' it. My point was, there are very VERY few questions about The Hobbit that are valid today. Pre-production won't even start for months. Today, this is a thread for celebration. Let's just let the man and the community celebrate before we start pelting him with questions he, or anyone else won't be able to answer for some time to come. Chances are the answer is going to change at least 10 times in the next few years anyway. Laugh

I do welcome you to the community, jimdorey! Smile

I'm writing from Jakarta, Indonesia and it IS the morning of April 25 here when I read the happy news at TORn (and trust me, I've checked this site everyday for updates!).

And a few days ago I also began re-reading "The Hobbit" in anticipation and I was pleasantly surprised that I've started my 'journey' back to Middle Earth at about the same time Bilbo did when he ran out of Bag End, and down the lane without a hat and walking stick... Smile

Thank you, Mr. Del Toro!

Thank you so much for taking the time to join our little community! You are most certainly welcome, your enthusiasm is shared and greatly appreciated!

We look forward to the awesome ride ahead of us all. The cast of Lord of the Rings said the experience, as well as living in New Zealand, changed their lives (for the better), and I hope such is the case for you as well!

In the words of Frodo:
"Elen síla lúmenn' omentielvo: a star shines on the hour of our meeting"

One thing I ask: please let us see the White Council, with Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Christopher Lee as Saruman, Cate Blanchett as Galadriel, and Hugo Weaving as Elrond. Perhaps Radagast as well?

Anyway, Welcome, friend! Wink

That's the best news I've heard for months! I'm so glad you're finally officially confirmed and look forward to the next years!

And thank you for posting here - it makes me feel so honoured that you are so considerate of the fans!

Congratulations to GDT

I think this series need some fresh pairs of eyes, and hopefully Mr. Del Toro will be able to bring something new and fresh to "The Hobbit". A better director couldn't be found.

I'm crossing my fingers for Production Diaries like PJ did with King Kong.

My first impression of GDT...

I remember seeing you on some horror special where they interview a bunch of directors. Never having heard of you before, and really connecting, because you act like such a kid who loves what he does. Much like PJ. I can't wait to see what you do with this franchise!

That was fun!

Yes, it was!
I thought that was charming that you wanted to tease us with a riddle that included part of the "Riddles In the Dark" chapter from "The Hobbit"! Believing it to be a good sign, I guessed that you must have good news for us if you felt like being so playful! I like guessing correctly!
Because I trust PJ, who gave us such an endearing and enduring interpretation of LOTR, and because he respects and admires your work very much, I trust you too.
I thought "Pan's Labyrinth" was powerfully emotional, well done, and disturbing. I'm looking forward very much to seeing how you deal with both "The Hobbit" and "The Segue" (for lack of a better title.)
My congratulations and best wishes to you!
May you do the professor and his stories proud!
Thanks,

Mae Govannen Guillermo!

Well this is very good news! It is wonderful to see you in this board and it was fantastic to hear you have been reading all of Tolkien's books. I tend to be jeaulous of people who can enter Middle-earth for the very first time... I hope you enjoy every minute of it.
If you don't have the very interesting "The History of the Hobbit" set yet, please do sent me an email and I'll sent you a set along. It might proof to be very useful on the road...

I'm very happy that one of the best Children books out there will be turned into a movie by someone who understands and loves 'faerie'. I'm already looking forward to see the tale come alive on the big screen and wished I had an opportunity to contribute to the project. I'm now reading the Hobbit for about 24 years and must have been in an out the tale for over 300 times. I must admit I'll be scared to go to see the movie, and every little aspect will have a huge impact on me personally, yet now I know that the project is in your hands I am comforted and feel a great joy! Thank you Guillermo and enjoy the ride!

WooHoo!!

Welcome to the family Mr. Del Toro... make yourself at home. Now how would like some tea? Or maybe something a little stronger? Wine? Ale? Let's see... what've we got? Hmmm... there's cold chicken, and a bit of pickle. And some cheese. Oh no, that won't do. Well, well, here's some raspberry jam, and an apple tart... But there's not much for afters. Oh, we're all right after all... just found some sponge cake Blush

Relax and take a deep breath Sir...

The plunge is long

Hey -
did you make that youself, Messenjah??
I have bought a couple of DVDs with martin Freeman in different roles and put them into my second DVD player while watching the prologue of FOTR in the other - to compare Martin Freeman's looks with Ian Holm in his young Bilbo make up ... but THIS is a so much better way of seeing whether he would work as Bilbo ... I think he would! Can you post that image full size, please?! It's cool like anything!

BTW I could imagine GDT will make a few very surprising steps in casting though ...

Congratulations Mr Del Toro

You are one of the few directors I would trust with this project. Now may I just suggest that you cast Brian Blessed as Thorin Oakenshield and your frequent collaborator Ron Perlman as Beorn! Martin Freeman is a good suggestion for Bilbo although Ian Holm could still narrate as Old Bilbo? Just throwing these things out there. But please don't leave out Beorn, he's a legend!

A really good answer but many, many questions...

I'm really extraordinary happy that the fighting is over and all came to a reasonable solution! Before i'd actually been on a point where i said that i did not want to see a Hobbit Film at all. But now I'm glad I will!
I'm also more than pleased that Ian will probably be involved.
But now there are thousands of questions in my little head which i can not wait to be answered!
The most important to me (and that might sound strange) is, who will make the music??? I'm so in love with Howard Shore's work that i would really wish he would get the same job for the Hobbit!
And what about dear Alan Lee and John Howe?? It would be so fab if they could do something on the project as well!
Anyway. I don't start about questions about the cast and so on but one last thing: What about Weta??
Oh, i'm soo soooo glad that there is a brighter future for Mr Bilbo!!!

No problem

I see your point of course - however the decision to go 3D has been already made without a doubt and will not be flip flopping. 3D adds a percentage cost over and above a regular 2D production and so therefore MUST be included in budgeting. GDT negotiated his fee for this undertaking (no doubt taking points as well as a base salary) and PJ has a total budget in mind, and so GDT would have to agree to those numbers that include 3D (we are pretty damn sure it is happening!).

Even more important is that the director would only sign on if he thinks he is capable of creating 3D magic. We know PJ can. And now it seems that, working with PJ, the two of them can!!

THAT is awesome. I just want confirmation on this - I know PJ will be holding it back a bit because they want to release morsels of information like a rock skipping in a pond until the release dates. So yes this decision has already been made. Absolutely. We just don't know the official outcome yet for, I think, marketing reasons.

REGARDLESS. You are right. Let's celebrate the moment and welcome Guillermo with open arms because he does have a rare and unique talent that when combined - like a true fellowship - with Peter's vision and storytelling, is going to sweep us up and throw us to the back of the theater. Not once, but TWICE! Love this franchise!

Welcome!

You're going to get lots of advice here.

Hopefully you'll ignore most of it.

******************************************
The audacious proposal stirred his heart. And the stirring became a song, and it mingled with the songs of Gil-galad and Celebrian, and with those of Feanor and Fingon. The song-weaving created a larger song, and then another, until suddenly it was as if a long forgotten memory woke and for one breathtaking moment the Music of the Ainur revealed itself in all glory. He opened his lips to sing and share this song. Then he realized that the others would not understand. Not even Mithrandir given his current state of mind. So he smiled and simply said "A diversion.”

Greetings! Congratulations! Welcome!

Unto Guillermo the Director, Greetings and Salutations!!

Uh, the folks here aren't insane, they're just really, *really*, really enthusiastic!Wink

Thanks for actually being here (well, virtually--you know what I mean), but have you gotten yourself in deep! Everyone and his ex-brother-in-law has an opinion (about "The Hobbit" and everything else!), and they're all going to want to tell you what they feel is the coolest, niftiest, sure-fire successful {fill-in-the-blank here}.

So, with that in mind, here are my sugestions:
1. Do cameos; they're fun, and they're your "tag" in your films;

2. Make Peter do cameos, too; he has a real knack for comedy! (see ROTK)

3. Please remember that things don't change very quickly in Middle-Earth; "fashion" is actually an 18th-Century idea, so Hobbits, Elves, Dwarves, Men-of-the-West, Istari wizards, etc. will be dressed pretty much the same way they were in FOTR, except maybe the Hobbit lasses had a different fad in ribbons or caps back in Bilbo's time, and the Elves were into different colorways for their garb;

4. WETA Digital is too cool for words, but I don't envy them having to create Smaug! They did the Cave Troll, Great Eagles, Balrog, Fell-beasts, Shelob, the Mumakil, and all the other beasts on the field at Pelennor-- and now, Smaug has to blow all those critters out of the water! And, no, I haven't a clue which actor would do a good Smaug voice!

5. If the action-figure company offers to make a Hobbit action figure of yourself, do it!

6. I like wizards; I mean, I really, *really*, really like wizards, and I really like Ian McKellen and Christopher Lee; so I think you really, *really*, really need more wizard scenes!! And my favorite wizards r-r-really need some lush Elven clothes when they're in Rivendell or Lothlorien!!

7. Does history repeat itself? CAN history repeat itself?? (can I insert photos into this post without messing it up? hope so!) (seems not; they didn't appear in preview or first post)

Would you have trusted these two guys to make a blockbuster in 1981? (...uh, maybe?)

Will you trust *these* two guys to make a blockbuster in 2010? (Heck, yes!!)

Best wishes, good luck, and all the stamina you're gonna need to pull these two balrogs out of a hat!

How do I get those photos to show up?

I tried to insert two photos, as attachments, and in the body of the text using the image editor on the toolbar. What am I doing wrong?

(cute photos; okay, cute *guys* in photos) you'll get a laugh, really!

Have you double-checked the size?

It's possible that if the photo is too big, it won't display. Here is the info from the Terms of Service - http://newboards.theonering.net/...forum.cgi?post=51#51 (which relates to all photos embedded in a message, not just footer pics):

5. Speaking of footers, so they don’t get too busy or big, please hold to the old TORn guidelines of keeping them at 50k or less and no bigger than 480x360 pixles in size (even better would be 50% of that, or 240x180, as large images take up more screen space in the posts here).

Also check out 2.20 and 2.21 in TORN 201 - http://newboards.theonering.net/...forum.cgi?post=50#50 - for tips on loading photos.

Dude, you rock....

Ok, just the fact that you posted a riddle here, that was great....and you motivated me to join TORn again...I was here before FOTR as a member and then....drifted....caught up in the LOTR fever, I strayed....

I read posts, and I felt connected here all the way through ROTK....what a wild ride.... but I didn't post much....yet, now....

I'm so psyched to hear that you are directing what will surely be an amazing Hobbit adventure- with all the support you will get from cast and crew added to your amazing abilities I have a great feeling about the outcome and I look forward to following your journey into Middle Earth as we fans will experience it...I remember how I felt upon hearing LOTR would become a movie with Peter directing.....bring the Rock!!! I can't wait....

Very well done...

Thx! Now you've got me looking over at a part of the TORn boards I hadn't paid much attention to in the past. :)

The part of Bilbo is sooooo speculative at this point. Oh boy! We can talk until we're blue in the face, I suppose, but in the end we have to just put our faith in GdT and PJ. Well, if they end up not using Ian Holm onscreen, I'm hoping maybe they use him at some point in a post-perspective voice-over narrative.

Thx again! Fun art.

Re: Posting pictures

I assume you mean *attaching* pics doesn't work in Mac. You could use the other method and post the pic at Photobucket like the FAQs suggest, then paste the html PB gives you for each pic into your post and the pics will show up.

though that would mean that I first have to get a photobucket account and upload pictures there. Maybe when I have a bit more time. Provided that it truly works with MacOS ... some features that show up on a Windows computer don't show up on a Mac. It would be too easy otherwise Wink

Btw, uploading pics as attachment works for me, surprisingly, but not posting them in the post itself. Oh well, I don't need it very often - every few months or so.

Oh. My. God!

This is a true privilege. The opportunity to actually be on a forum and to be able to be greeted by my favorite filmmaker (and one of my favorite people in general). This is truly an experience that I never thought that I would have. It's great that you're making such an effort to become involved with the fan community Mr. del Toro. I've always dreamed of meeting you in some way shape for or fashion, but to see a filmmaker, someone who seems so distant and far away in Hollywood, actually showing up online for the fans is an incredible display of care that makes me feel truly proud to be a fan of your work and to be an aficionado of cinema and culture in general. Hopefully, your stay here will be a pleasant one, and you're certainly welcomed by me!

Where and when was the pic of GdT and PJ taken?

Is it one that's been out there before? I don't remember seeing it anytime in the past few months. Credits say it's courtesy of Stuff.co.nz., with a story from The Dominion Post, dated Fri., 4/25/08. Anyone know where the two of them were when the announcement was made? LA? UK? NZ?

I think if this *was* a sendipitous event, it is truely amazing. However, it is almost too amazing to be believed. I think the timing was actually planned. Did not GdT hint at the date in his Riddle? Why wait if a likely date were so well known in advance, unless if it were to be in honour of the original story???!!!

At any rate, I must commend you Gramma. on your Eagle eye (like the Eagles that were the saving grace at the Battle of Five Armies). That was a great spot. :)

Thanks...

for the riddle, Guillermo - and welcome to tORN. I'm glad to see that someone's finally going to do a serious job of the Hobbit. Now we'll really know what Thorin, Oin, Gloin, Ori, Nori, Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, Smaug, and all the rest of them really looked like! By the way - I never found out. What was the right answer to the riddle?

GdT was in NY and PJ was in LA, I think

at least that's what I've gleaned from the various little news snippets I saw during the day(s) before and after that date. From what GdT said, it sounds like the announcement was supposed to be earlier, but was delayed by some last-minute details. If they pre-planned that date, that makes them ultra geeky and makes ME smile! :D

G. del Toro should have done LOTR too.

Hi fans and hopefully Guillermo. I haven't posted since the XenArwen days when I rather gave up on my hope for Jackson's LOTR and I hope others are as happy about Guillermo del Toro directing the Hobbit as I am. We've seen already that GDT can use film to move and engage us but I'm particularly excited about his ability to quietly and gently astonish (see Pan's Labyrinth). Jackson's work (though obviously a labor of love) relied too heavily on special effects and action to entertain. Go back and read the scenes like the Temptation of Galadriel or the Awakening of Theoden - or if you don't believe me read Roger Ebert's FotR review. del Toro knows how to communicate subtext through performance whereas Jackson seems to feel most comfortable having his actors dictate subtext: "nothing ever dampens your spirits" or "you have come for information" should be messages a film communicates, not pieces of dialog. I also feel confident that del Toro will try not to make a Hobbit that is as Hollywood Conscious as Jackson's LOTR. Much was made of the independence Jackson showed in filming everything in New Zealand but his LOTR is chock full of Hollywood: one-liners, sudden awakening from dreams, and improbable-but-cool action setpieces. I believe GDT has the sensibility to appreciate some of the more quaint and curious moments in Tolkien, moments that may not play well in studio boardrooms but that fans are nevertheless hungry for - if not for Tolkien at least for something that isn't a cliche. The magic of Tolkien is in discovery. The Hobbits are the perfect guides because they are unaware of the vastness of their world - and that world is revealed during a journey of walking many hundreds of miles. If Tolkien wanted them to understand their world before entering it he would have given them a way, but he knew that the story would lose it's immediacy if the audience knew ahead of time what Mordor, Edoras or Isengard were like in detail. Jackson (or Raimi or any Hollywood director) are afraid to give an audience anything they might not understand at the first pass - del Toro realizes that you can respect your audience enough not to dumb things down for them. Once, after reading an audience one of his poems, Robert Frost was asked to explain it. He said: "You mean you want me to say it again only not as well?" Here's hoping that Bilbo will be more Ofelia in Pan's Labyrinth and less Anne Darrow in King Kong.

"or if you don't believe me read Roger Ebert's FotR review"

Really? Ebert's opinion holds little weight for me and yet you quote him as though his is The Final Word in film. I was more able to consider your words before getting to that part. He is the most famous film critic to be sure which gives him no extra credibility for me. Thanks for the post. Tongue
