OFFICIAL HOBBIT ANNOUNCEMENT - BREAKING NEWS!

BREAKING NEWS: Hellboy and Pan's Labyrinth director Guillermo del Toro will spend four years in New Zealand making two films based on The Lord of the Rings prequel The Hobbit, it was confirmed today.

The official announcement was made in Hollywood by Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson - who will co-produce The Hobbit - fellow producer Fran Walsh, and executives from New Line Cinema and MGM.

Jackson and Walsh said del Toro was "a genuine storyteller" of outstanding ability.

"A true original, Guillermo is a cinematic magician who has never lost his child-like sense of wonder. He understands that the fantastic must be grounded in the real and that all stories are only ever a reflection of ourselves," say Jackson and Walsh.

"We have long admired Guillermo's work and cannot think of a more inspired filmmaker to take the journey back to Middle-earth. We are delighted ‘The Hobbit' is in such trustworthy hands."

Del Toro said he considered himself "blessed" to become part of the filmmaking community in New Zealand.

The Mexican-born filmmaker will base himself in New Zealand for four years to work with Wingnut Films and Weta production teams.

The two films will be shot back to back.

Del Toro's films include The Devil's Backbone, Blade II, and the Oscar-winning Pan's Labyrinth. His latest movie, Hellboy II: The Golden Army is due for release in July.

Guillermo del Toro to direct 'Hobbit'

Filmmaker signs on helm feature and sequel In a major step forward on "The Hobbit," Guillermo del Toro has signed on to direct the New Line-MGM tentpole and its sequel.

The widely expected announcement came Thursday afternoon jointly from exec producers Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, New Line president Toby Emmerich and Mary Parent, the newly named chief of MGM's Worldwide Motion Picture Group.
Del Toro's moving to New Zealand for the next four years to work with Jackson and his Wingnut and WETA production teams. He'll direct the two films back to back, with the sequel which will deal with the 60-year period between "The Hobbit" and "The Fellowship of the Ring," the first of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy.
New Line is overseeing development and will manage production. Both pics are being co-produced and co-financed by New Line Cinema and MGM, with Warner Bros. distributing domestically and MGM handling international.
Del Toro most recently helmed "Pan's Labyrinth," released through New Line's Picturehouse. The fantasy set a record as the highest grossing Spanish language film in U.S. box office history.

Ahhh!

Yup. Now it's time for a bath and a good, long nap!

Hopefully we'll get some cast and crew confirmations soon, but after that we'll have ages to wait before things are really rolling in earnest on the production.

I guess we'll just have to crank up our Anticipation Clocks once again!

Isn't it delightfully sadistic what we put ourselves through?

The next 4 years!!!! wow thats a long time!! And I'm really pleased to see that Weta is going to be involved!!! It wouldn't be the same without them!!
So we also know that the sequel will deal with the 60 years after The Hobbit before LotR!!! This is interesting!! I guess this mostly comes from the RotK appendices and Unfinished Tales. I'm going to start reading over that time period as soon as I can! Not to mention The Hobbit!!!!!

I noticed how thin PJ looks, so different from the filming of LotR.

Theres some good in this world, Mr. Frodo, and its worth fighting for.

"Far over the misty mountains cold

To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away ere break of day
To seek the pale enchanted gold.
The dwarves of yore made mighty spells,
While hammers fell like ringing bells
In places deep, where dark things sleep,
In hollow halls beneath the fells.
For ancient king and elvish lord
There many a gloaming golden hoard
They shaped and wrought, and light they caught
To hide in gems on hilt of sword.
On silver necklaces they strung
The flowering stars, on crowns they hung
The dragon‑fire, in twisted wire
They meshed the light of moon and sun.
Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away, ere break of day,
To claim our long‑forgotten gold.
Goblets they carved there for themselves
And harps of gold; where no man delves
There lay they long, and many a song
Was sung unheard by men or elves.
The pines were roaring on the height,
The winds were moaning in the night.
The fire was red, it flaming spread;
The trees like torches biased with light,
The bells were ringing in the dale
And men looked up with faces pale;
The dragon’s ire more fierce than fire
Laid low their towers and houses frail.
The mountain smoked beneath the moon;
The dwarves, they heard the tramp of doom.
They fled their hall to dying ‑fall
Beneath his feet, beneath the moon.
Far over the misty mountains grim
To dungeons deep and caverns dim
We must away, ere break of day,
To win our harps and gold from him!”

Woo hoo!

Each cloak was fastened about the neck with a brooch like a green leaf veined with silver.
`Are these magic cloaks?' asked Pippin, looking at them with wonder.
`I do not know what you mean by that,' answered the leader of the Elves.

Jumps in for a moment.....

Dangit, The ANNOUNCEMENT had to happen while I was at dinner.

When I read this 15 mins ago, I leaped out of the chair and jumped up and down for 2 minutes. "YES!! YES!!!! YES!!!!!!" I ran out the bedroom, down the stairs and out the back door into the backyard (lucky it's night!) still jumping up and down in circles and screaming "YES!! YES!! YES!!!" for 5 more minutes. One of the people I am living with ran out the door and asked "What happened? What is it?" But all I could do was yell out "AFTER THREE STUPID YEARS OF LAWSUITS AND CRAP, YES!!!!!" He had to go back in the house in bewilderment...."You don't understand, sorry," I said, and he left. (Sorry, D.!)

Who cares if the neighbors hear.

(Um, I'm a little bit excited? Sorry!Blush)

I'm going to sneak out the back door into the yard do some more jumping up and down after midnight. I can't hold it all in.

I am in tears right now. I despaired more than most. I am STILL skeptical of the honchos at NL and Warner's....that they will try to pull a financial fast one on our new friend GDT. I guess the candle I burned last night WORKED.

I can't post right now any more...I will sit back and read all your wonderful responses. This whole project means a lot to me. IN many ways. Sometime later tonight I will try to explain how I feel. (Warning: may get a little DEEP.)

But this is like Miruvor.....or should I say, like lembas in Mordor.

I will sit back and bask in all this, before I write what I am feeling.

Our back yard

Sunflower, I was touched by your post. Your mention of running out into the backyard reminded me of a book by Dorothea Lynch where she said:
No one is special, are they, when all is said and done? And of course each of us is very special, very singular, carrying weight. I matter. I would like to open the window tonight and yell that outside. I matter. Or go down and lie next to the plants and whisper it.

I think I will whisper it to the plants tonight .... In fact I think I will say ..we all matter!!

Plot of the second film

Personally, I'm hoping that the plot of the second Hobbit film revolves around the White Council driving the necromancer (aka Sauron) from southern Mirkwood. I think it would tie the stories together nicely, and since that whole even was fairly vague, they could introduce some very cool characters that they didn't get to use in the other movies like Elladan and Elrohir, Radagast the Brown, and maybe even get a glimpse of Tom Bombadil.

*Wipes eyes*

Sorry, I've got the Kleenex out. And the iced tea. And the Pecan Truffle Nonni's Biscotti. I am going to be camped in front of the computer till about.....midnight. I am still on Cloud 9 and will be there for days....

Nienna, yr post touched me too. Go ahead and do it. Lie down in the garden and whisper to the plants, ""I'm special!" (there's a John Lennon lyric that comes to mind...but it's corny in this day and age)

I am not an official "tree-hugger" but I love trees and whenever I walk through woods, I stop, put my hand on a tree trunk, and have a "chat"with the forest. I call them "my brothers and sisters." I beleive trees have souls. There's a bit of John Muir in me, I guess. And I swear, after a moment or two, I can "feel" the sap flowing within, like the tree's blood. I feel I am joined to it in a way. ("The Force"?)

Oh, I'll have a chat with the forest tonight! (Tolkien was the trees' champion, after all.)

Go ahead and do it! Times like this are few and far between in life....besides major family events, personal milestones, and milestones with friends. This is one such happy milestone. May I say, I am a 30-something and should be beyond all this...but I don't care!

FYI, the rest of the family has gone out for a while. They can't figure me outSly

Círdan saw further and deeper than any other in Middle-earth, and he welcomed Mithrandir at the Grey Havens, knowing whence he came and whither he would return.
'Take this ring, master,' he said, 'for your labours will be heavy; but it will support you in the weariness you have taken upon yourself. For this is the Ring of Fire, and with it you may rekindle hearts in a world that grows chill.'

Yahoo announcement regarding the 2nd Hobbit film

www.yahoo.com posted the same story of del Toro officially taking the helm for The Hobbit movies, at this link:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080425/ap_en_mo/film_hobbit_del_toro

The VERY INTERESTING thing is the blurb at the bottom of the article, where it states:

Please note that this version DELETES INCORRECT reference to second movie spanning time between "Hobbit" and "Rings"; New Line now says movies are based on book only.

So, does that imply that it will be part 1 and part 2 of The Hobbit from the book?? To me, that's great news, as it will mean there's little chance they'll leave anything out (at least anything important) in the making of the film, as they might to make the first one cover all of The Hobbit in just 3 hours (or less).

I haven't seen this mentioned elsewhere yet. Mayhaps some TORn spies can double check this with "the powers that be"??

The official New Line press release says . . .

Speaking of Guillermo del Toro, "He will helm the two films back to back – telling the story of “The Hobbit,” and its sequel, which will deal with the 60-year period between “The Hobbit” and “The Fellowship of the Ring,” the first of the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy."

It starts again!!

Having missed all the excitement of the speculation first time around, before LOTR came out, I look forward to many hearty (and heated!) discussions as The Hobbit movie news progresses!

*rubs hands with glee*

My students will have no idea why I'm so chuffed today. They all know LOTR because of the movies, but none of them have a clue about The Hobbit. I don't even know if there's a Korean translation of it or LOTR available!! I should assign it as a book report, hah! :D

FOUR YEARS ... groan ... groan ... I won't have any fingernails left!

Gradually changed opinion...

I have to admit.
I wasn't thrilled, (at all), back in the day when his name was first mentioned. But during this journey, I found myself liking the man, and his movies, more and more.
It has now reached a point, for me, where he's as much part of the "family" as PJ.
So welcome Maestro, and take us home...

MGM's press release says so too.

"Del Toro will move to New Zealand for the next four years to work with Jackson and his Wingnut and WETA production teams. He will helm the two films back to back – telling the story of “The Hobbit,” and its sequel, which will deal with the 60-year period between 'The Hobbit' and 'The Fellowship of the Ring,' the first of the 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy." 7 blockbusters

in the fan base of one. Jackson no doubt paved the way for HP; in production efficiency anyhow. Now HP has done it's part by proving the power of "outright fantasy" in theaters. Unless THE HOBBIT and THE HOBBIT RETURNS bomb to the core of Middle Earth, we can bet our hairy feet we'll see the rest of Tolkien translated to the silver screen. But is that a bad thing?
