My first post-

A riddle for you all-

Half familiar, half unknown.

A thing it is, šIt almost is-š

This thing all things devours:
Birds, beasts, trees, flowers;
Gnaws iron, bites steel;
Grinds hard stones to meal;
Slays king, ruins town,
And beats high mountain down.

The day of the moon will be
when all is revealed to thee
Questions will cease
Answers will please
WeŽll learn of the Shire
and all you desire.

At ten minus Three.
Joining to be
Ten minus Eight
Add to the slate
of the two dozen princes
that die without winces.
And add to each day of
the week.

I'm terrible at these...

ok, so is just the first paragraph the riddle?
the answer is "time"
the second paragraph- you'll tell us the answer on monday? The Shire....hm, does this have something to do with "The Hobbit?" The info comes out "within the next five days" according to IGN (courtesty of Compa Mighty, on Main) (and since you said "half unknown," that sounds like Hobbit/bridge movie- plus, you are posting on TORn, so I'll make a guess that it's LOTR related)
72...hours= three days...join with 24 princes- hours- one day? *whine* I don't like this one...add seventy-two to each day of the week? or add nintey-six? ARRGH!!! I don't like this last paragraph/stanza- whatever- is "the slate of two dozen princes" a day?

Ok, so all I can come up with now is that the answer to the first stanza is "time" and we might be hearing about the Hobbit on Monday...

Well, well!

Mr. GDT, is this really you? If so, (quoting Bilbo to Gandalf, in Bag End) "Welcome, welcome!" My goodness! We're not used to visitations of this sort, and if this is really you, I hope we have many more!

It sounds as if you are just as excited as we all are and are trying to hold it all in! Sly

As to your riddle....I'll echo Laerasea and say I'm not that great at this, and let others better than me figure the whole thing out. I guess after all the stops and starts we've had on this project the past 3 years, I've become cautious at being too optimistic. It's been SUCH a long wait and we fans have been waiting oh so patiently!!

While waiting, I've been checking out your website, Del Toro films, and like it very much. Doug Jones's site is great too. Well....it's late at night, must go, but if this is really you...! (Excuse me, I'm a bit awestruckWink)

Welome to TORn

I wish I were better at riddles.

After Time (stolen from Bilbo of course) all I could guess was seven and eight. But welcome anyway, even if you did hurt my brain.

No improvement is too small or trivial to be worthwhile.

OK....

Well, I'll chance it. I HAVE to.

The first part is, yes, "Time" (digging out my copy of "The Hobbit" here)

The 2nd part sounds like "Within 72 hours"--by Monday night ( am I close?)

But for the life of me, I can't figure out the third. Sorry! (I wish Andy Serkis were here.....he'd know, yes, yess!Laugh)

Things do sound encouraging though! I do sincerely hope ALL parties involved in the litigation--New Line, Warners, The Tolkien Estate, as well as Peter Jackson and crew, and yourself, of course (watching as a bystander, that is)---have gotten a settlement that is to their satisfaction. I am dying to hear how all this came about and what the results of the negotiations have been!
Confusticate and bebother all this waiting for news! :) But I know it will all have been worth it.

Riddles!! Oh My Stars!!

Welcome! Welcome!! Laugh

Thank goodness it was Bilbo in that cave, I would have eaten, I am not good at Riddles ...

but here's my attempt Smile

I get that the 'time' (from Bilbos riddle in the Dark)

The day of the moon will be Moon Day is .. Monday

At ten minus Three ... 7
Joining to be
Ten minus Eight ....72
Add to the slate
of the two dozen princes ..... 24
that die without winces.
And add to each day of
the week. .... ? 7 maybe

Is this then something revealed on Monday
or the 24th of April at 7am ... LOL!!

Ah after another thought ,,, monday: 72 + 24 (added to Monday) = Friday! (from where Im standing) - just in time for Fiesta Friday Maybe Smile

I'm not sure I can wait that long Laugh

Excellent

We can't KNOW it's GDT but it sure feels like him and its fun either way. There are other folks named Guillermo so perhaps one of them has a sense of humor.

So, I think the time portion from Bilbo's riddles is the part we are told at the opening that we are expected to know, as stated before.

I am a little stuck on the part with the princes that die without winces. The only dictionary definition I can find for winces is some variation of flinching or drawing back in pain or fear. I like what you have done with the numbers, but what to make of these winces? Anybody? Buhler? Buhler? Anybody?

Welcome!

Whether or not you're the Guillermo, you're very welcome here!

Throwing my attempt in:

It almost is time.
Monday all will be revealed.
At 7.

I think the "two dozen princes" are the 24 hours in a day. Add two to that, and perhaps we are a mere 26 hours away from a big announcement!

Ahhh check out the brain on Kimi

I like the 24 hours of the day being equal to 2 dozen princes, certainly better than any thing I have thought of. Time zones surely make any time, 7 for example, pretty tough to figure. In L.A.? In Wellington? In New York? Mexico?

hmmm...

Ok, so we know the first riddle is TIME, and clearly there is much of it left before a big announcement. I agree that the third paragraph might make reference to differing time zones. Is it possible that, when the announcement comes, GDT and PJ would be broadcasting (joining) from two places, allowing one man's clock to read 2:00 while the other reads 7:00? How many time zones apart is NZ from LA, or wherever else GDT might reside? And yes, 2 dozen (hours) surely die without winces, and we wouldn't have days of the week without them.

At ten minus Three.
Joining to be

And the answer is...

"Time a half moon forty." It's a cryptic answer, because it's really an anagram for a secret message: "A finale from thy moot." I suspect this means that Guillermo has secretly been attending riddle moots and is offering this one as a, well, a finale. Either that or I have no idea what the answer to this riddle is! :-)

Anyways, welcome, Guillermo, and thanks for stretching our brains a bit!

Seems the riddle isn't ours alone

Over on the Hellboy boards the same message was left but this time by somebody official, with an administrator's login. Sure wish we knew for sure. If we can confirm him we will have Altaira give the logon some official status (like "Director") so we can all know for sure.

But with the same thing on the other board under an official log-in, seems pretty likely to be the real deal.

It's really great to have you here. Hope to see you often. BTW, congratulations in advance!

I have another take on this, you all... today is full moon. It *could* be the Moon Day. Of course it could be tomorrow as well. It is either today or tomorrow, that much I can tell you! Smile

Ok, so it's Sunday or Monday at ten minus three: 7:00 pm
Then more information (joining to be) is coming every day (24 hours = two dozen princes) of this week at ten minus eight: 2:00 pm

Further thought

The way I origionally interpreted it, "moon day" was Monday, but then he talked "add each day of the week" coupled with "four days" meant that the Announcement would come Thurs or Fri (maximum weekend Online discussion time for fans.)

But then this sounded puzzling b/c such a huge announcement, corporate-wise, would run counter to the Media News Cycle. Most major Media stories, when the White House wants to release one, or some big local news story, would be to release them on a Monday morning, for maximum weekly media exposure. The Eliot Spitzer scandal hit the headlines on Monday morning. A lot of scandals do.

Then I saw Kimi's "time zone" explanation and it makes sense!!!! An Announcement on Sunday, 7 PM LA time ("joined with" 2 PM NZ time) would give the story maximum Hollywood media exposure, since it would hit the headlines Monday morning. 7 PM LA time (10 PM Eastern Daylight Time) Sunday night, and the news will be global by midnight. Which means it would hit the Reuters, AP wires etc by early Monday morning.
Then Del Toro's "more each day of the week"/every 24 hrs means that after the story breaks on Monday (or Tuesday in the Hollywood Trades---Variety, etc) more details will be added daily, in the peak weekday news cycle. We'd learn more each day in the Trades about the Lawsuit resolution, etc etc.

PJ and GDT are timing a joint news conference/Announcement, esp if they are going to be revealing potential casting decisions, to let fans know they are working in sync.So no controversy, right from the get-go. And they appear to be doing this to take advantage of the Weekly Media Cycle. Which may or may not be a Warner's/NL corporate directive.

That's my thought. We shall see!

Oh, and again, welcome, GDT, since it really does seem to be you!

...I was skeptical last night when we talked but it looks like I can shed the cynicism that comes from seeing too many hoaxsters online.

This is great fun, I must admit. And even though I don't know much about Del Toro as a director (I have seen Hellboy but not being a huge comic book fan, it isn't high on my list of movies I love. Haven't seen any others)... I do think I like him very much as a person. I think he'd be fun to play with and I guess we'll get the chance to find out.

well...

I bought Pan's Labyrinth (the special edition) for my son's Christmas present. I'm just being a bit wimpy about the violence I heard hinted at. I'm perhaps especially sensitive to violence against children. And frankly, just have watching the downer movies Atonement and Masterpiece Theater's Room with a View knocked my mood for a wallop. It's kind of on my list to see PL. I just have to find the right time, I guess.

and just for the record.. I'm not an erstwhile "PJ directing" fan. I liked his version of LOTR - in some respects, very much. I'd be happy to have him direct. But I've maintained from the beginning that I would entertain the thought of someone else doing it quite easily. In fact, the current running theme between myself and good friend is: sometimes the universe wants to show you something it thinks is really cool and that you'd really like... but you have to leave the spot you're in and walk to a new one to see it. Will you do it?

Well

You're right there. PL IS a downer, of major proportions....plotwise. That is due to its setting more than anything else. But there are numerous redeeming elements as well, and if there weren't, if there was not light and truth and eternal beauty--IMO< for the cinematic AGES in it, no one would watch it over and over....

As to "what if he was looking"...well, I was joking!!!!! I'm not going to be scanning "who's online"! Laugh. I imagine as once he becomes aware of that TORn function, he may seek Admin ways to have an end around that, or he'd be mobbed. Plus, he will be soon be VERY busy, VERY quickly. As if he isn't busy enough wrapping up HBII
already.

As for attirudes to directing...we're probably more similar in opinion on this than not.

And now, I HAVE to get off here a while, I have things to do, and esp things to wrap up before 10 PM tonight! Can you feel the excitement???????

I'd say Monday's a good bet when you consider del Toro is Spanish...

... and Monday in Spanish is Lunes and Luna in Spanish is moon.

So, yeah, it's a safe bet that it'll happen on Monday...

I thought maybe it would be at midnight since "two dozen princes" equals 24, which would bring us to midnight... but the rest of the riddle has me stumped.

I'll leave the number-crunching to you math geeks... just wake me when it's time to hoot and holler. Smile

Wait...what time zone?

Which timezone? Well, I'm ecstatic that GDT is visiting TORN; the LOTR films always succeeded because of the relationship with the fans (it was made by fans for fans, not just a movie project, but art)

"We must away ere break of day to find our long forgotten gold"

***We've been waiting for far too long for The Hobbit. Last LOTR we got was Fall 2004 with ROTK Extended Edition. So its been three and a half years.

But as soon as GDT is officially signed up, Weta will INSTANTLY start making new concept art and designs and EVERY DAY we'll be visiting TORN again to get lots of joy out of even the tiniest piece of news.

How will then handle so many Dwarves? Hobbit is more Dwarf-centric. Will the Great Eagles get a design overhaul? (They weren't a "Showcast creature" in LOTR so they didn't have the best of CGI) will the Eagles talk? Will we see the White Countil? Will we see Legolas? Will you cast David Bowie as King Thranduil? (He was up for Elrond but didn't get the part) what casting is being thought of? How will you do Beorn the Skin-Changer? What of the Old-Norse based Men of Dale? And SMAUG! How will Smaug the snarky evil dragon be realized?

****In keeping with the emphasis that Weta has had on REALISM in past LOTR films......will Smaug's Dwarf-gold hoarde....be made of real gold? ^_^

"Pleased to meet you, hope you guessed my name, but what's puzzling you, is the nature of my game"

For any of you in doubt, yes, that's El Maestro himself. He hangs out on Del Toro Films with us, and is at present very active on the HELLBOY II boards as well. I'm here in anticipation of G getting the get-go on this, and I have so many bits of me crossed it's getting bloomin' painful, dagnabbit. :D

Okay. I'm off the floor and back in my chair.

Part of my brain is still frozen, and the head-rush from this MASSIVE TEASE has my eyes still fuzzy... so I'll just stand aside and blink stupidly while the worthies here who can think clearly in the face of an impending MAJOR SQUEEEE SESSION sort it all out.

Mr. del Toro... Welcome :) I hope you know what you're in for! We tend to consume things whole when it comes to our Tolkien, our movies, and our filmic family... so consider yourself WARNED :D

I guess the only thing I can say to your brilliant riddle... Our newest Wizard will arrive precisely when he means to, with words that will blow us all out of the water! I hope Peter's standing next to you when it hits. He always gets such a kick out of us; and he knows what's coming ;)

I have to go have a good cry now.

Check it out here

Riddle and a welcome..

Welcome to TORN forum Guillermo!

I've been a lurker for years, but your riddle drew me, and I had to reply.
Although most everyone has said some of my guesses so far. LOL

The last segment really has me baffled though. So I await everyone's ideas!

Firstly why would three be capitalized as is eight. Now that might just be a riddle quirk I don't know about.
But like you all, the two dozen princes that die without winces has me stumped.

Great to have all this action finally though and fun to read everyone's replies! I've been walking around the house all morning muttering the lines of the riddle to myself, trying to figure it all out. LOL

Yes, but . . .

It is conceivable that somebody could have seen the post there, which I agree is 100% GDT, and then come to this board, signed up and posted the same thing.

I DO agree it is the real deal, but I would hate to find out later it was an impersonator and it is still possible.

I have to admit I saw this post last night within minutes of it being posted. I think I have it figured out!

It talks about time in the first stanza.......and then it talks about information to be revealed in the second.......and in the third....possibly it means at 2pm in new zealand(monday) and 7pm(west coast time zone) in california......and then it says
"And add to each day of
the week."
Possibly meaning new news will come out through the next week.....

this is what i think.........

My crack at it

I couldn't find this idea yet, so here's my go at it

---

A riddle for you all-
Half familiar, half unknown. Two Movies, 'The Hobbit' and the bridge
A thing it is, šIt almost is-š
This thing all things devours:
Birds, beasts, trees, flowers;
Gnaws iron, bites steel;
Grinds hard stones to meal;
Slays king, ruins town,
And beats high mountain down. Time

The day of the moon will be
when all is revealed to thee
Questions will cease
Answers will please
WeŽll learn of the Shire
and all you desire. Monday

At ten minus Three. 7
Joining to be
Ten minus Eight 2
Add to the slate
of the two dozen princes 24
that die without winces.
And add to each day of
the week. One Week
--

I go with the general thinking that it nearly is Time and the Two Movies will be announced on a Monday

The last paragraph states which monday that is. I like the time zone conversion idea of 7 and 2 and my little time-zone-convertor research shows that is true, so that would mean
7am Monday in Los Angeles and 2am Tuesday in New Zealand. That would explain the Two Dozen Princes that die without winces as it is not 2am monday but a day (24 hours) later in NZ, without any time having past. The time passes (dies) without anyone noticing (no wincing)

Adding each day of the week probably means one week from now, so that would be next monday the 28th at 7am LA Time

Honored sir.

What a great surprise!

"Tolkien, like Lewis, believed that, through story, the real world would become a more magical place, full of meaning. We see its patterns and colors in a fresh way. The recovery of a true view of the world applies both to individual things, like hills and stones, and to the cosmic - the depths of space and time itself. For in sub-creation, in Tolkien's view, there is a "survey" of space and time. Reality is captured on a miniature scale. Through stories like The Lord of the Rings, a renewed view of things is given, illuminating the homely, the spiritial, the physical, and the moral dimensions of the world."

very fun and clever!

Joining in late!

I think the 24 princes is a reference to four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie. But since they are princes, it must be a really great pie.

Wince is also a term for a faulty computer thing from Windows. Which probably has something to do with the number Pi.

So, my contribution to solving your riddle is this -- we are in for a royal treat and don't worry the suspense will not go on forever...

Thanks for the very nice intro and outreach to TORn!

Good sign!

It bodes well that Guillermo would come over and play with us! Not just send over some sort of press release, but actually come up with a hobbit-style riddle to make his announcement. That shows fandom, and I find that promising.

(Here's where I put in my pitch to make both movies directly on "The Hobbit", so as to reduce cutting scenes out. You don't need a bridge film, because the bridge comes at the very end, when Balin drops in and visits Bilbo. Later on, in "The Lord of the Rings," Frodo mourns beside Balin's tomb, remembering Balin's visit long ago. Which indicates that Bilbo had adopted Frodo by then (some years after Bilbo's adventure, of course)--therefore Frodo can be present and referred to in the film, in child-form, in a cameo appearance in an epilogue scene. No need for a whole movie for that. If you want any bridge at all, which is not absolutely necessary.)

(Here also I can put in my pitch about "The Hobbit" belonging to a different sub-genre from "The Lord of the Rings." LotR was a quest movie, and it had to hone down to whatever most furthered the quest to destroy the Ring. In contrast, "The Hobbit" is a road-trip. The goal--to win treasure from a dragon--is not the true plot, but merely a motivating factor. As in all road-trip stories, the real plot is how the main character evolves through exposure to a variety of experiences far removed from the narrow existence he left behind. In this sub-genre, coherence or goal-relevance do not matter nearly as much as impact on character development, and seeming side-tracks often turn out the most important of all. Thus fighting the spiders is perhaps the most indispensible scene of all, in terms of showing and developing Bilbo's transition, whereas if one thought that obtaining gold was the goal, one might make the mistake of cutting that scene out. I accept that you will probably have to cut something. But please keep in mind the central importance of Bilbo's inner journey.)

My website http://www.dreamdeer.grailmedia.com offers fanfic, and message-boards regarding intentional community or faerie exploration.

i've been thinking about this riddle for a while

i've been thinking about this riddle for a while and basically i think its this: its about the announcement of Hobbit related news-- about the two part movie/ casting/ production and of course confirmation of GDT's involvement. its set to break within the next 72 hours (from Saturday, the day it was posted) which would place it on Monday (day of the moon). or the countdown could start Monday and can break within the next 72 hours from that, which would place it no later than Wednesday. GDT says as much on an audio interview at VoicesFromKrypton, and the riddle fits perfectly into it.

Supporting Kimi's theory...

"Joining to be" (ten minus three) 7 and (Ten minus eight) 2 = - 5. (-5 joins 7 and 2), then, ("Add to the slate of the two dozen princes") (-)5 + 24 = 19.

Wellington, New Zealand is 19 hours ahead of LA (MGM).

Hence, 7:00pm Monday ("Day of the Moon") in LA is 2:00pm on Tuesday ("and add to each day of the week") in New Zealand.

May it Be...

Love you guys! You're so welcoming! My avatar was made by Kusanivy, one of our HBII bunch who is a fantastic cosplayer and is training to do makeup with the legendary Dick Smith. She's also a devoted Fan-Sapien (Dougie's nickname for his fans). Great gal.

Thranduil was also my choice, and came up at a Q & A Dougie did here in the UK a few weeks back when he was asked about The Hobbit. He'd done his ADR looping session the week previously, doing the voice of Abe in HBII, and GdT was there in the booth with him. Doug asked about The Hobbit and G said that it still hadn't been settled, but that IF he did the films there would be roles for Doug in it. Fans at the convention mentioned Thranduil, and it has also been mentioned on the IMDb boards. Dougie grinned and said it would be lovely to play a role where all the latex he had to wear were some pointy ears!

He also went on to mention that NZ was a cert, and that G would have a big hand in writing the script. Nothing really new, but nice to hear.

HM

Oh, incidentally, the 'HM' thing is Guillermo's fault. His idea. Wink

Right...

I'm abit confused, if Mr Del Toro has posted on these boards that's pretty cool, but have we managed to verify that yet? I've gotten a bit lost in the mass of posts! I know the post on the Hellboy boards was genuine, but have we confirmed whether or not the one left here was him or an impersonator? If it is real, then wow! The excitement seems to be boiling over at the minute and I for one am just itching for an announcement!

A moment to reflect...

I think it's safe to assume that a positive announcement is imminent, even if we don't know for sure the exact timing (sneaky GTM hobbitsess!!)

That being the case, I just wanted to say that the manner in which GTM has opened up the first real public discourse on the project is, in a word, perfect.

We've all been so frustrated by the incessant hurdles, many of which still no doubt remain, and the constant niggling doubts that this dream for so many will never get off the ground. Add to that the nervousness evoked by putting this project in unproven hands (wrt to Lord of the Rings, that is) and you get, well frankly, a lot of pretty frazzled hearts and minds. Objectively, it is obvious that Guillermo is uniquely suited to taking the reigns from PJ in this particular sense. He is an established artiste in his own right with a vision that appears compatible with PJ's, and we know his commitment to his craft and his projects defines him as a director of the ilk of Peter Jackson. But we haven't really had any indication of his mindset coming into this project other than a few optimistic words - and certainly no action as of yet.

We know it will be gorgeous, we know it will be accomplished and intelligent, we know that he can nurture incredible performances from actors and writes with images more than words much as PJ so effectively does. But does he have the passion that catalysed PJ's effort? Lest we forget that the LotR whole is far greater than the sum of its parts; a direct consequence of the atmosphere and spirit that pervaded all aspects of the project, which, though not limited to PJ (the exact opposite in fact), certainly required his catalytic passion to spark.

This riddle, trivial as it is in the grand scheme of all that is yet to come out about these movies, is the first glorious sign of the man's hobbit-ridden head. He recently mentioned that he has been working through all the published works on Middle-Earth, which I hope that he meant literally. It would be an impressive feat in and of itself that must have left his mind completely saturated with Tolkien's mythology in a probably quite profound way. Though this may not have been the ultimate reason for his posting a riddle that both references Tolkien' own riddles and represents a cornerstone of The Hobbit's structure and themes, it absolutely shows us that his head and heart are in the right place.

Personally, more than anything else, this is the most important news for me. Guillermo, your worthiness has never been in doubt in my book... but even so it is damned wonderful to see that you're on the same page as the rest of us.

Elen sila lumenn' omentielvo.

Good luck buddy - and welcome to this glorious community.

My Guessesss my Precious

I would like to throw my hat in the ring, My guess would be Thursday 10 am-- I will leave the time zone thing to the smarter ones.

I tend to look at things a little more simply. time + 7 + 2 or 72 plus 24 plus 7 equals 103. it cant be 103 days ( cause all of us would go insane ) so 103 hours from his post -- roughly thursday 10 am --whatever time zone.

I am cautiously optimistic with the news at hand. I hope this will complete the journey as we hope, Fran and Peter and all else involved with LOTR brought it to us as if we were watching a historical document come to life.... I hope GDT can pull it off 75 % as well as they did.

Hey, don't panic, guys! Another take...

Steelsheen, don't panic! I printed out the Riddle and pored over it. I had an initial suspicion that I disavowed that may now be proving correct.

To simplify, here's my theoretical timeline:

--Friday: GDT says "4 or 5 days" until News
--Saturday: NYC Comic-Con. (But a curious lack of immediate video footage, when I was expecting a lot by Sunday.)
--VERY late Saturday night/wee hrs of Sunday morning, Eastern Daylight Time/( aka NYC time, and we presume GDT is still in NYC): he posts The RIDDLE
--Sunday morning (I think), the first IGN video goes up
--Monday morning, the 2nd video goes up, the kind of detailed interview that I expected to go up by Sunday
--10 PM EDT passes, with no News

Here's my interpretation of this timeline, incorporating the Riddle and Compa Might'y news item in Main, about new (favorable) developments in the Tolkien Estate lawsuit.

1)Friday. GDT says 4 or 5 days until News. He is checking his sources following developments in the lawsuit, NL< etc etc. testing the Winds. He knows a resolution is very near.

2)Saturday, NYC Comic-Con. GDT is interviewed and gives extensive comments about his artistic ambitions for The Hobbit. But curiously, these videos are not footage from a Floor Panel, like expeted, but behind-closed-doors interviews. We do not see these interviews right away, b/c they talk of how he will make the films. They are the statements of someone who WILL be directing, you can tell. But as of Sat afternoon, he can't confirm that he will be. So he "hides" these prepared bits of info, in case the project is a No Go. No use releasing them and diappointing the fans.

3)Saturday evening/ wee Sunday morning: between midnight and 2 AM, GDT is on the phone with his sources, maybe in his hotel room in NYC. He gets word: the project is a GO, and the final details are to be hashed out. TheTolkien Estate has chosen NOT to file an injuntion to stop the films from being made; the suit will be settled at a future date out of court. The films can move forward. He only has to sign the papers some time this coming week, as soon as NL and Warner's have them ready. The process will take a few days.
He then posts the (prepared long in advance) Riddle, with the coded timeline, from his hotel room in NYC in the wee hrs of Sunday morning. (I was one of the 5 people up at 3 AM Satuday/Sunday when this hot TORN)

Stupid time-out. Part 2:

To continue:

4)So now that NL and The Tolkien Estate are in agreement that the films WILL be made--the TE is not fiiling an injuction to stop the films from being made--GDT was probably waiting on this news, this was the major stumbling block to the project going forward. He must have found out about this Saturday night. So now he is free to release all that pre-parepared video footage over the course of the coming week.
NL, and Warner's are now busy preparing the paperwork for him to sign, sometime this week; that will make his involvement official. (this is the "4 or 5 days he was speaking of...he has to fly back to LA and go through the process of signing the paperwork or whatever it is he and his agents do.) This will take a few days. Think about it. can't just find all this out and rush out with and announcement within 2 days...especially not if he and PJ were planning a joint Announcment. They have to prepare this.

5) In the meantime, he is now free of course to release those carefully prepared tasty video tidbits he recorded, in case the news said it was a Go. And I expect, if the timeline IS a week, we may have many more to come. This is of course a treat to keep the fans entertained while they wait out the week, and there might be some spontaneous stuff! "add to each day of the week"

6)I still stand by my "beginning of the weekly news cycle/Monday" interpretation...we just got the wrong Monday. And GDT wouldn't release the Riddle or the vidoes of he anticipated a wait longer than a week. It would be too early. So a few days more!

But I hope I am proved wrong....

PS.

Steelsheen, it IS a go. There's no if now, just when. Re-read the Riddle. "we'll learn of the Shire/And all you desire?...Questions will cease/ANSWERS WILL PLEASE."

Not the words of someone who still does not know if he will be directing. He wouldn't have said "answers will please" if he weren't.

cross-posting:

sorry! Let me repeat: just b/c he has the deal signed and sealed Wednesday or Thurs does NOT mean that we will be hearing word of it. We will likely hear nothing. Just innuendo.
As per the first part of the Riddle, he and PJ are preparing a grand "unveiling" set for next Monday morning. Then we will know.

well Sunflower,

i still think we got the right Monday, its the April 21st day. i'm not just basing it on the riddle, but from several media outlets that had GDT reiterate on the Monday/ 72 hrs/ midweek time line. the fact that the Tolkien Trust news broke yesterday just means that we're probably this much closer to a Hobbit announcement.

part of the reason why i'm reasoning on this side of caution is because i'm not just considering the Tolkien lawsuit to be the only "hard points' that GDT was referring to in the interviews. for all we know it could be other things that is more closely related to GDT himself and his relationship with NL/ WB. it could be anything (financial, creative control, scheduling?) that both sides must agree upon before GDT is a sure thing.

also there are the other pet projects that GDT hasnt set aside yet, there's "Saturn and the End of Days" that he's been working on that could very well take his full attention if The Hobbit doesnt pan out. if GDT is surely a go on TH, then news on Saturn would be pretty quiet, which isnt exactly the case, given how much its being reported around the net.

i'm all for GDT being signed, sealed and delivered, but i'm also being realistic that no matter how neatly packaged this whole deal is, it just takes one tug on a stray thread for the entire thing to fall apart. i've seen it before with other franchises. i dont see what would make The Hobbit immune to that.

Capitalization and punctuation??

Does anyone think there is any significance to the capitalization and punctuation used in the riddle (or lack thereof)?

For instance, the numbers Three and Eight being capitalized.

And there is a period after the first line of the last stanza: " At ten minus Three." Is this to somehow separate it from the following lines in the interpretation?

Just curious whether the odd punctuation and capitalization are random or intentional.

Thought the same..

I had noted that myself that they were capitalized and if that was significant, but had thought that maybe it was a quirk of riddles that I didn't understand.
Would love to hear more theories, this has been extremely fun!!

Does anyone think there is any significance to the capitalization and punctuation used in the riddle (or lack thereof)?

For instance, the numbers Three and Eight being capitalized.

This is quite the interesting riddle, and it's been buzzing about in my head all day.

I like the answers you guys have come up with, and I pray to God that it isn't a hoax, and/or a pointless riddle.
I still can't figure out the last section, though; what with the numbers. I was never any good at math. ;)

'Hobbits like a good tilled Earth' is a stereotype!

Add to the slate...

Does anyone think that the "slate" of the two dozen princes could mean the catual time zone MAP? if the slate is literally the map, then a specified time would (such as 10:00 in the -3 zone) could be added to by each person in his or her own time zone to figure out what the time would be for them.

I have this feeling that since Three and Eight are both capitalized, they are to be differentiated from "ten". Perhaps it's not as simple as 10 -3 =7. We capitalize proper nouns, which might indicate that Three is an actual place. We know that time zone -8 is LA. Time zone -3 is Brazil...so maybe we each need to "add to the slate/time zone map" to find out what times for each of us would be 10 in LA and 10 in Brazil. Perhaps the "joining" is to be at 10 in LA??????????????

And do this (add to) each day of the week until we hear something? Oh I'm confusing myself. It probably can't be that because there's a moon day involved.

Ok I am running away quickly before pies and tomatoes are thrown....

I read it slightly differently...

Hola Guillermo, żCômo estás?

The day of the moon will be (see below)
when all is revealed to thee
Questions will cease
Answers will please
WeŽll learn of the Shire
and all you desire (obviously, we'll hear some news we'll like
)

(From Wiki: Monday (pron. IPA: /ˈmʌndeɪ, ˈmʌndi/) is the day of the week between Sunday and Tuesday. It gets its name from the Moon, which in turn gets its name from Old Norse- Máni, (Old English Mona), the Germanic Moon god. Similarly, the names in Latin-based languages such as the Italian name (Lunedì), the French name (lundi), the Spanish name (lunes), and the Romanian name (Luni) come from the Latin name for Moon, luna. The Russian word, eschewing pagan names, is понедельник (poniediélnik), meaning "after Sunday." In most of the Indian languages, the word for Monday is Somvar, with Soma being the Sanskrit name for the moon. The Japanese word for Monday is getsuyōbi (月曜日) which means day of the moon.)

At ten minus Three. (7AM)
Joining to be
Ten minus Eight (+2 = 9AM)
Add to the slate
of the two dozen princes (24 hours, or one day)
that die without winces.
And add to each day of
the week. (24 hours + 7 days = 8 days)

9AM, 8 days from when he left the message. (he left it Sunday morning, )

So that would be Monday, April 28th, at 9 AM

I'm leaning towards Thursday

If the news is to be released just a few days after Moon Day, that could well be Thursday in LA, Friday in NZ. Why would this day be important? Look at the other main news story on the main page right now. Friday is ANZAC day in NZ and PJ is actively involved in events there. I can think of no better time for a big time announcement than ANZAC day.

But that might just be me hoping we hear something this week, rather than next week.

Nah, you're all wrong ;-)

You have your whole CALENDAR wrong. It's the Elvish Eldarin week we need here, and taking it from http://lostworldofennor.angelcities.com/time.htm we get:
Day 1 - Orgilion (Elenya) "stars-day"
Day 2 - Oranor (Anarya) "sun-day"
Day 3 - Orithil (Isilya) "moon-day"
Day 4 - Orgelaidh (Aldúya) "trees-day"
Day 5 - Ormenel (Menelya) "Heavens-day"
Day 6 - Orbelain (Valanya) "Powers-day"

And since elvish weeks have only 6 days and since each months starts with a new week, last Moon Day was on Monday (casually) 21st and the next Moon Day is on the *Sunday* 27th.

Anyway, I don't believe any of this. I think he actually means Monday.

Now the keyword here is TIME, so I read the entire verse with TIME in it:

(TIME for the announcement is) At ten minus Three (09:57).
(TIME for) Joining to be (at the forum is at)
Ten minus Eight (09:52 that's when he'll log in and prepare for the announcement)
(TIME) Add to the slate
of the two dozen princes
that die without winces. (remember to take your timezone into account)
And add to each day of
the week. (which means, wait for a whole week, and live it fully, in anticipation)

Now this is absolutely unambiguous. Right? RIGHT?!!!! :-P

day of the moon...

In Tolkien, wasn't there a day when the moon was just right for the revelation of crypted codes/moon letters? Do any of you more knowledgable Tolkien fans think that might "shed any light" on this riddle? (sorry about the pun)

My best guess....

OK, I'll try and go through this top to bottom.
"Hal familiar, half unknown" is that we have already seen half the riddle in The Hobbit, and half of it is made by someone else.
'A thing it is, "It almost is-"' I will try to explain - I believe that he means we add on the following answer to this sentence. The answer to the following paragraph, is, of course, time - unless he's trying to trick us and there's actually another meaning. So therefore, 'A thing it is, "It almost is-" time. It almost is time. that is my guess. Then it gets hard.
"The day of the moon will be
when all is revealed to thee
Questions will cease
Answers will please
WeŽll learn of the Shire
and all you desire."
The day of the moon - possibly Monday, as some have said, and also possibly actually referring to the next full moon - though maybe that's too obvious. Though, one question - is there some reference to "Moon day" anywhere in The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, or even possibly The Silmarillion? Because that might give us some clue if he's really getting into this...the rest, as far as I can tell, is just saying that that is the time that we will know about this. So we will know about it on a Monday, or maybe the next full moon, or on an actual 'Moon day' possibly referred to in one of Tolkien's works.
At ten minus Three.
Joining to be
Ten minus Eight
Add to the slate
of the two dozen princes
that die without winces.
And add to each day of
the week.
At ten minus three - seven - joining to be ten minus eight - two - which either makes 72 or 9 - the two dozen princes that die without winces, possibly referring to instant death - beheading? poison? or it may possibly be referring to not actual living princes - one idea I had was stars, which die each morning, fading from sight. The two dozen could be referring to a star constellation with two dozen stars in it. slightly poetic, and I'm probably reading too much into this and boring the lot of you, but anyway....getting back on track, 72 plus 24 makes 96 and 9 plus 24 makes 33. No idea which is right, but we'll move on. And I've no idea where the winces come in, it might just be to rhyme. Add to each day of the week....notice it doesn't say 'add to that the days of the week'. Which makes it wierd....like me! Crazy It could just mean 7, but somehow I don't think so. So all I've got is something like, It is almost time. Monday 96 (or 33, or maybe a star constellation) possibly plus seven. So that means something like, 96 hours after Monday, it will be revealed. Reminding me....Monday to what part of the world? Coz I'm in Aus here....It may mean the time zone that Guillermo is from, Spain apparently, or it may be NZ, or maybe USA for all I know. Following the star constellation idea, it may mean that all will be revealed at the first time after Monday that this certain star constellation is seen. Anyway, that's my best attempt at this. My first post, possibly my longest.....that was fun! But I'm guessing that you guys don't want any more riddles....oh well. I'll look for them somewhere else.
Such are the first words of the Gaffer, following the challenge of the riddle.

You do realize....

that right now, we are all like Gandalf before the Doors of Moria. Throwing out every spell that has ever been uttered in ME. The answer is probably so absurdly easy and right before our eyes....it'll be, in hindsight, like "speak 'Friend' and enter"

When we do find out the answer, I am printing out this thread and saving it forever. The Riddle is now legend.
