'What Say You' - The Hobbit Movie Reports ~ Rumours & Rumblings ~ Del Toro in talks to Direct ~ Jan 08

This is from a heads up from Earl on the Main Discussion Page, and no doubt we'll soon see it on the Home Page, and possibly another thread ... but I am just continuing with the 'What Say You" threads which started last year ...

Some questions .... Smile

What do you think about the report ... true or false ... or something in between?
Do you think it is for both movies if it be true?
What do you think about Del Toro Directing The Hobbit?
Do you think there is a chance or change - that Peter will direct the Hobbit or the other film?

If you believe it to be true - what do you feel Del Toro will bring to the Hobbit?
Are you happy with this choice?

What are your other thoughts on this current report?

Del Toro doubles up to direct big-screen "Hobbit"
By Borys Kit

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Guillermo del Toro is in talks to direct back-to-back installments of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit," which is being co-financed by New Line and MGM.
Del Toro's name was on a short list of directors who could tackle the project, one of the most anticipated literary adaptations of the past decade. An ill-chosen director for "Hobbit" could put billions of dollars at stake for New Line and MGM and could turn off an audience that encompasses millions of passionate readers, Tolkien fans and obsessive geeks.

Few filmmakers have the cachet that del Toro has, as well as a deep love for the source material, an assured grasp of fantasy filmmaking and an understanding and command of geek culture as well as its respect. Del Toro has built that goodwill through such films as the Oscar-nominated "Pan's Labyrinth," "Hellboy," "Blade 2" (which was made by New Line) and "The Devil's Backbone."

For New Line, making "Hobbit" had become a priority in the wake of its billion-dollar success with the Oscar-winning "Lord of the Rings" movies, which were co-written and directed by Peter Jackson. Jackson wanted to adapt "Hobbit," but when he got into a dispute with the studio over profit participation, the project went into limbo; neither New Line nor MGM, both rights-holders to the film, wanted to risk alienating fans of the trilogy by making an adaptation that didn't have Jackson's involvement.
The December resolution of the Jackson suit, facilitated by MGM CEO Harry Sloan, paved the way for "Hobbit" to get back on the road to the screen. However, because of other commitments that included "The Lovely Bones" and "Tintin," Jackson could not take on writing and directing roles, opting instead to become an executive producer with approval over creative elements of the pair of films.

Because of the Writers Guild of America strike, no writer has been hired to adapt Tolkien's children's classic, though that process will be fast-tracked once the strike is resolved. Del Toro and Jackson will oversee "Hobbit's" writing.

Principal photography for the films, which will be shot simultaneously, is tentatively set for 2009. The production budget is estimated at $150 million per film. The release of the first film is slated for 2010 and the second for 2011.

"Hobbit," which Tolkien initially wrote for his children, was published in the U.K. in 1937 to wide acclaim. It centered on Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit who joins a group of dwarves and the wizard Gandalf on a quest to find the treasure of a dragon named Smaug. Tolkien went on to write "The Lord of the Rings" 17 years later.

Del Toro is putting the finishing touches on Universal's summer release "Hellboy 2: The Golden Army" and recently produced the critically acclaimed ghost story "The Orphanage."

Hmmm ...

I simply don't have the knowledge to judge if it's true or how good or bad it will be, as I don't know any of Del Toro's other films. But what struck me was this comment:

Seems they know a hurriedly made, hollywoodized movie would be a huge mistake, because the Tolkien fans are a force to be reckoned with Evil As for Peter - I can't imagine he has fought so long with NL only to back down now and to let them only use his name. At the moment he may be announced for executive producer only, but I trust him not to only sit back, but to do much more than other people in this job and to heavily influence the movie. I think he knows that most of the fans want this and will not disappoint them. And maybe there's hope for him to direct at least one of them - the schedule isn't carved in stone yet, after all.

I do not suffer from LotR obsession - I enjoy every minute of it.

Yes, that which you quoted ...

Caught my attentionas well ... maybe because it seemed more of a finger wagging opinion than a piece of the report - it even seemed a little stern ... but well placed in the report, and (I feel) quite close to the bones of that which matters ...

Del Toro Would be a Brilliant Choice

While parts of Pan's Labyrinth are gorrier/sadder than anything in The Hobbit, he has a great grasp of giving fantasy heart and believable characters. If you look at many fantasies made many of them just focused on the dragon and ignored the characters.

My husband Jim was just joking "And he looks like Jackson before Jackson lost all that weight." ;->

Executive producer...

 ...with approval over creative elements.

I'm not sure how much creative approval Executive Producers normally have, but this sounds to me like PJ saying "Ok, I can't direct because I have all these other projects on. You can put me down as Executive Producer, but I still want to the final say over how it will look!"

If at first you don't succeed, try again.
If you still don't succeed, give up - there's no point making yourself look stupid!

From some of the reports ...

it is saying that Peter has this kind of Creative control elements in these films ...

so do you think, regardless of who Directs, that the Films will have that 'long-arm' element of Jackson's creativity?
Are you saying this is a good idea or not, or neither?
Sorry just trying to clarify ... Wink

I wonder though ...

if it is micro managed from a pre-production and scripting aspect from Peter and team, how much room there will be for a Director to move within those boundaries...

Mark Ordesky had a lot of say over time and budget, and I wonder if this is something which Peter, in his capacity, will use to rein in the Hobbit or expand with it ... he's no egomaniac and appreciates others input, but I wonder ....

Thanks deej ...

Your our best scout!
I couldn't find the comments I had ... but that is interesting in itself ... the comments from other Directors about this project ... and knowing that the man that did LOTR will helm the hobbit on a different level ... I wonder how I'd approach even the thought of this type of collaborative approach ... I think there'd be some anxiety here ... especially as to how people (fans and POI) are going to react to this news ...

I also think that when headings like 'discussion between person and A and person B' are announced, there maybe some monitoring happening to see what the general reaction is ...

I wonder where Del Toro came on the Front Page poll?

Off to have a look ...

He's on the "short list"

and I think he'd do a fine job working in collaboration with Jackson. I really believe that Peter will be more involved with the production of these 2 films than the normal Executive Producer's job description states. I'm sure he'll have final say in who will actually be standing behind the camera... just as there were multiple directors standing behind the cameras of LotR. One vision. One leader. One Jackson. It'll all be spot on and something that will blow our socks off!

No fear :)

Hmmmm....

Del Toro is very passionate about fantasy. He says it should be very intimate. And that the grotesque is beautiful.

So expect a personal, intimate, and grotesque The Hobbit.

He also feels the big monsters in a movie should be ultimately non-scary, and be victims in the larger scheme of things. So expect the Trolls, the Spiders, and Smaug to be sympathetic characters, say along the lines of Jackson's Cave Troll only moreso. I'd expect the scariest charcters to be, say, Gandalf, Thorin, Elrond, Beorn and Bard. And probably the Mayor of Laketown would be the evilest.

Hmmm. I don''t know if I would like this.

******************************************
The audacious proposal stirred his heart. And the stirring became a song, and it mingled with the songs of Gil-galad and Celebrian, and with those of Feanor and Fingon. The song-weaving created a larger song, and then another, until suddenly it was as if a long forgotten memory woke and for one breathtaking moment the Music of the Ainur revealed itself in all glory. He opened his lips to sing and share this song. Then he realized that the others would not understand. Not even Mithrandir given his current state of mind. So he smiled and simply said "A diversion.”

MarketSaw

Jim from MarketSaw still believes that Peter Jackson is going to direct this - and that this might be only to keep interest and news going on the project. Still, his writing appeared to reveal that he was somewhat surprised and that it actually might be true (but checking his sources again). With his recent accuracy for predictions, I'll be watching for any updates that his site will have as well.

Personally, I would much rather have Peter direct this as a first choice (like most on this board) - but if that can't happen, Del Toro would be one that I'd be comfortable with.

...other than the posts i've seen here regarding their stories, but since PJ has said he doesn't have time to direct it, and the studios have said he's not directing, I think i'd be more apt to believe them than a fansite.

I guess it could all just be a ruse, but somehow I doubt it.

I'm with you, too, Gramma ...

If Del Toro signs on the dotted line, I think this relationship could really work out beautifully!

Sure, PJ is my first choice to direct, but I'm also a big GDT booster.

(And perhaps he might even handle certain aspects of the movie just a smidge better than PJ might ... specifically, I think GDT would likely steer clear of some of the more dignity-infringing "comic" moments with the Dwarves. Sure the Dwarves should occasionally be funny, but I think GDT would likely veer away from the burping/farting/tossing variety of comedy. And that would make me very happy!)

I really think these guys will get along like gangbusters. This could really be an incredibly fertile creative partnership. And if it doesn't happen on The Hobbit, then I hope one day it happens on another project. I think these guys are cut from the same cloth and could make something really special as collaborators.

And I also totally agree that PJ won't be a hands-off Exec. Producer. The fact is, in Hollywood the job of "producer" can mean anything from "guy who used to control the rights to a property a long, long time ago but hasn't had anything to do with the production for years" (a la the Weinsteins on LOTR) to "guy who says Yay or Nay to every single creative element in the movie" (a la Mr. Lucas).

If he doesn't end up directing himself (I'm still crossing my fingers) I expect the Lucas model will be the one PJ follows.

After all, why would PJ & Fran have signed on at all unless they could have total creative control? Wouldn't make any sense for them to just lend their names. So I'm sure their gonna be in charge here ... and GDT would be a terrific addition to the team!

PJ executive producing

Think of his work as what Lucas did with Empire, Jedi and all the Indy films. REALLY hands on. I have no concerns whatsoever there.

Del Toro worries me, though. He couldn't finish LotR... and he is just way too gory... I'm not sure he will be able to to the story justice. Now imagine the bridge movie! Must I repeat he could only finish The Hobbit out of the extensive Tolkien works?

I say he is not the man for the job. But we'll have to wait and see... I hope Jim Dorey is right.

True ... he did say he couldn't get through the books ...

But I think he was talking about LOTR more in terms of pleasure reading. (Not in terms of a potential directing job.) I don't think he meant any offense. Admittedly, Tolkien's writing style can be a little dense sometimes ... and it's not necessarily to everybody's taste. I certainly love it, but I can see why that might be something of a stumbling block for some readers.

But remember, too, that was before he was up for the job, of course.

GDT is a professional through and through. And if he's being considered as director for one of the biggest and most important directing jobs of the decade ... well, you can bet he'll give it another try! I'm not worried about that. He'll read and digest everything. Cover to cover. He's a pro. No worries. He's not going to go into a project of this magnitude without getting incredibly prepared and familiar with all the material.

And with PJ & Co. at the tiller ... I'm not worried about the story. Others may disagree, but personally I trust them to do the right thing.

After all, ultimately the only story GDT would be responsible for is the one in the script that PJ gives to him. As long as that's written well ... I don't care whether he's read LOTR or The Silmarillion. Sure, it'd be great if he was steeped in everything Tolkien ... but it's more important to me that the script for the movie he's actually making be well written. But that's worst case scenario. As I said before, I'm sure he'll do all the homework in the world for this job. He's very smart and very talented.

As for the gore ... well, he's not always gory. It depends on the story and whether it's appropriate for the film. Again ... he's a professional. If the film calls for gore, he'll give it some gore ... if it doesn't ... then he won't. (Look at Hellboy ... not much gore there at all.) Sure, some of his horror-ish movies have some gore, but I'm sure he'd be more than willing to adopt the look and feel that's appropriate for the movie he's directing. If it's not right for the movie, he's not going to shoehorn in gore just because he really, really likes it.Tongue

For my money, I'm still hoping PJ decides to take the job himself. It's his job to turn down, after all. He's earned that right. But if he does step back and let someone else sit in the director's chair ... well, we could do a LOT worse than GDT!

Wow.

I know there are lots of folks who might disagree ... but for my money ... PJ AND GDT each directing a movie would be pretty freakin' amazing. That would seriously rock my little world!

MarketSaw's been spot on with a lot of their rumors thus far. So I'm starting to trust Jim more and more.

More importantly ... this actually sounds pretty plausible. It makes a great deal of common sense. Something Kiwi's are known for.

Besides, after surviving the hellishly brutal marathon grind of making three of the biggest movies of all time back-to-back-to-back ... (four if you include Kong) ... there's nobody on the planet more sensitive to what that kind of gig will take out of you. It's a real physical, emotional and psychological beating. So I could totally understand if he didn't want to direct both movies himself purely out of self-preservation.

But ... I would also totally understand if he didn't want to put somebody else through that kind of soul-crushing meat-grinder of an experience either.

So each director taking one movie just makes sense to me. It's got the "ring" of truth, you might say!

I absolutely agree with you there Bucky...

He's a pro. I'm proud as Mexican that he, Cuarón and González Inárritu are having such a great run in Hollywood and that people all over the world are recognizing him to the point of having The Hobbit (not just a movie!) offered to him. And I'm sure he'll do his homework, and in the end, it should turn out fine.

My problem is that his head seems elsewhere in the "vast fantastical realm"... and you know it's not the same taking over something as a job rather than an absolute pleasure and realization.

Peter imprinted his passion for Tolkien's works in every single scene, in every stage of the movie-making. With the team that is sure to be assembled, the won't be a thing to point out but the difference in the passion while directing.

Then again, we know Viggo wasn't a fan before... anything can happen. I'm not entirely against Del Toro, I just think they could go elsewhere.

Oh, I know where you're coming from ...

Absolutely. We don't want somebody taking over the reigns who doesn't love the material as much as we do! Of course!

But to play Devil's Advocate just a little ... maybe there's something to be said for somebody coming to the material fresh. He might see things in the material that we don't, because we're so familiar with it.

I remember taking a non-Tolkien friend of mine to see FOTR shortly after it came out. (Okay, I admit, it was more like a kidnapping! But come on, he needed to see that movie, whether he wanted to or not!) Anyhow, he was a Marvel comics guy, and had never read LOTR or seen the Bakshi film. He came to the film with absolutely no knowledge or preconceived notions whatsoever.

And when Gandalf fell into the chasm with the Balrog ... I looked over ... and he was crying. I was totally blown away by that. Because he didn't realize Gandalf was coming back! The experience was that fresh and vital for him because he knew nothing of what was to come. And in that moment, I was very, very jealous!

Now I'm not suggesting that coming to the material completely cold is a good idea for a director, but perhaps having somebody without much of a previous relationship with the books could be a positive thing. No baggage of any kind.

Just a thought! Wink

Perhaps this whole thing will awaken a deep well of Tolkien fandom within GDT that nobody knew existed! Even him!

Good point too

You speak truth, Bucky. Tongue

That could very well happen.

In further news, a fellow forummer posted at Main a story of a French site, saying a user of theirs heard Del Toro confirming he was chosen for The Hobbit.

EXCLUSIVITE !

My translation:

Exclusive!

We had told you earlier today that Guillermo del Toro had commenced negotiations with New Line concerning him directing The Hobbit.

Things seem to be near to official confirmation, as one of our sources went this afternoon to an advanced screening of the last production of the film maker, The Orphanage.

During a debate with the audience, Del Toro has announced, filled with joy, that he had been chosen to be the director of The Hobbit.

Now, we only have to wait for New Line's official announcement to confirm his claim. But everything seems good and certain.

Thanks a lot to Justine to whom we owe this exclusive news.

Interesting ....

Yes, I saw this earlier, but I couldn't read the original site! Sadly, my high school-level French is terribly, terribly rusty these days! Thanks!

Verrrry interesting. If this tid-bit is true, it would seem to be from the man, himself.

But this just fills me with even more questions! Like, will he be directing both movies? Or just one? Will he be working at all on the screenplay? What will PJ's role be? Or Fran? Or Phillipa?

Okay. I need to settle down. I'm giving myself a headache! Tongue

He may not be everybody's choice, but in tandem with PJ I think he'll do a tremendous job. Like Lucas and Spielberg in their prime making Raiders of the Lost Ark!

What say I ...

maybe I should just say My rambling thoughts .. as probably not much of this will make much sense ... Tongue Cool ... so ya dont have to take any notice, or throw tomatoes ...Pirate
I have searched the net for more confirmation but to no avail - although the French website (which I cant read) which was posted by caesar said there was a confirmation ... so at this point, Im not sure but ...

Ramble, ramble, ramble ...

I am SOOO in two minds about this ...

What do you think about the report ... true or false ... or something in between?
Well, I think we may hear confirmation of a Director.... but, I have some doubts about the longevity of this particular arrangement as see it as more of a temporary placement - and just feel that within the next 8 months these arrangements will change - and they will be necessary unavoidable changes .. I think this decision (if confirmed) doesnt see him there for the duration of the process in that capacity.

Do you think it is for both movies if it be true?
I'd like to think not - but either way, my thoughts are that this wont pan out as expected anyway - so for two movies - no.

What do you think about Del Toro Directing The Hobbit?
My preference is a Jackson/Walsh colaboration - hands down.

and my reason for that is I feel Del Toro will have Too many creative ideas with no where to place or to put them ...Very scattered energies and fractured ideas that dont mesh ... a budget blow-out with the ideas and problems associated with them ...
This (Directing) arrangement may loose its perspective ... less is sometimes more .... not the biggest is the betterest ... the focus gets lost ...

Do you think there is a chance or change - that Peter will direct the Hobbit or the other film?
Yes, I think there will be a change - and unexpected change at that - almost Peter taking the reins by default - though that wouldn't be a bad move closer to the movies becoming a reality, even if they have started filming ... I think it woulld even start with the script ... but Peter steps in to save the day ... we all love a hero who can do that, and he is capable and in the position presently to do that ... but not just yet. I dont think things will go as planned if Del Toro is confirmed as Director.

If you believe it to be true - what do you feel Del Toro will bring to the Hobbit?

Hold-ups. I dont think this guy has the luck on his side down the line.
Some of this I think relates to timing ... it going to be long overdrawn and there will be difficulties around the making of this movie ... expect the unexpected and irreversable to happen - and I think its out of the hands of anyone to change it ...

Are you happy with this choice?
as theres no choice yet made, its hard to say - but in essence - No.
But thas not to say the right choices wont be made in the long run ...

What are your other thoughts on this current report?

This seems to be swift decision making - a hopeful new prospect like Del Toro mixed with much antisipation and anxiety.

and have to say I feel there is some reluctance by Del Toro around this step - (even though there are no reports) with the direction of who is to direct - even if it is confirmed - expectations and all that ... and Im not sure presently if what is being asked of Del Toro is as clear cut as its made out to be - Director ... (title yes, but as for whats expected - no) or exactly what he feels he can bring to the plate himself - . If I said there is a political element involved here, I not sure Id be speculating too far from the truth, but it has to do with skill and creativity, and im sure that these two elements are going to clash at some point ... or one will try to over-ride the other, but these seem only to be half the story - the whole deal would seem very tempting and I think there would be a definite attraction to having a name like his linked to these films ... but Im still feeling that Del Toro will not hold the reins for long ... if this comes through ..

So now we wait and see what to come ...

Not quite the best news possible, but close

The best news possible would be that PJ or Fran were directing it. But if we can't have either of them, I'll be quite happy to settle for the Oscar-nominated ubergeek Guillermo del Toro. Heck, I'd be happy enough with Sam Raimi, but del Toro is better. If you haven't seen them yet, go out and rent Pan's Labyrinth and Hellboy. This guy could be PJ's long-lost Mexican brother. And if the two of them are working hand-in-hand (with, fingers crossed, a script from the PJ/Fran/Philippa triumvirate), we should be in for a delightful Hobbit movie that fits quite comfortably into the Tolkien movie universe.

He has read the Hobbit though ;D ... part article inside ...

Here Del Toro talks about the Hobbit book ....

This is an extract from an article at contactmusic.com

http://www.contactmusic.com/...for%20hobbit_1054179

Quote

...................

He explained: "It's the only Tolkien book I read. I tried my best to read the Lord of the Rings, the trilogy. I could not. I could not. They were very dense.

"And then one day, I bought The Hobbit. I read it and I loved it. So it would be a privilege. But listen, I wish I knew."

Peter Jackson and New Line had been involved in a long-running dispute regarding royalties generated from the hugely successful fantasy trilogy but a statement issued by the studio this week confirmed the Kiwi - and partner Fran Walsh - is to executive produce two films based on The Hobbit.

The first is thought to be a straight adaptation of the book and should hit the screen in 2010 while the second could serve as a prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, using Tolkien's lengthy appendices as source material.

Del Toro explained that the idea of working with the creative talents of Jackson, Walsh, and their long-term special effects partners Weta Digital, was a mouthwatering prospect.

"I met Peter and Fran when we were trying to do Halo. I think what they're doing in New Zealand is amazing," he said.

"What they're doing, in terms of the way they approach filmmaking — the way I see it is, it's Hollywood the way God intended it.

"Because it's a filmmaker's dream and a filmmaker's facility. So it's heaven. The question is: Will I go to heaven? I have no idea."

Will someone please send him a collection of Tolkien books .. Wink Angelic

I think it could work out

Pan's Labryinth was beautiful, though I certainly hope he will not go as dark or as gory. That was, I believe, an R rated film, after all.

I do have serious concerns about him directing the bridge film without having read LOTR. He will need to devote his vacation time to completing that. And then sit down for lessons from master Wizard Christopher Lee (In full Saruman garb, no less). "Hearken now, Guillermo, to the history of Elves and of Wizards in this Middle-Earth."

All in all, with Peter's guidance I think it will be well done. And I too hold out hope that there may even be certain improvements. like a more accurate to text revelation of Gandalf's fire enchantments (particularly in the caves of The Great Goblin where they are essential), and more of the dwarves being funny because of what they say, instead of. . . flatuation. And of course Glorfindel must be there. . . but that would actually be more likely under Jackson. . . So Peter better tell him!

"Hear me, hounds of Sauron, Gandalf is here! Fly if you value your foul skins, I will shrivel you from tail to snout if you step within this circle!"

"Do not be to eager to deal out death in judgement. Even the very wise cannot see all ends."

Chill, my friend:)

See Earl's thread in this on Main. (the thread with the fewest comments I think)

You'll find my general thoughts there.

I think it is too soon to asume he is not a Tolkien geek. We knew before that he was a Hobbit geek, and who knows since then. I am sure Jackson had a few "personal meetings" with him, to test his knowledge etc. I am sure in campaigning for the job, he has updated his Tolkien scholarship considerably. And if he has, I am jealous for him...oh that we all could again have that "first time"..it's...well...like that other "first time." TongueEvil

Plus if you read other threads, you'll see there is more than meets the eye. He is apparently a HUGE fan of Shore too.

BTW, Orcbane, you may want to check out that thread you started for me in Offtopic...as well as yr mail. I mailed you a day or two ago...

Ainu,

Jackson has said specifically that he does not like magic. The historical realistic element trumped fantasy in his Tolkien adaptation, and he felt vivid depictions of magic would diminish it. He even complained about the Dead and wished they could be taken out, but didn't dare mess with the story. So how enthusiastic would he be depicting Gandalf's magic here, I don't know. Esp when he "created" the cinema Gandalf.

As to goriness..there are places to go moderately gory in the Hobbit. The Battle of Five Armies, the slaying of the Spiders, fighting the Goblins etc. But he knows this is adapted from a kid's tale, he is an admitted Hobbit geek, before any other Tolkien (and I KNOW there will be :), he knows he can't make this a typical GDT film. See comments on "adhering to Jackson's world" on AICN above. There are no gory torture, murder or childbirth scenes in The Hobbit, as far as I know:)

As to the rest...we shall see. But GDT was my 2nd choice and I would not mind this news. Though I WISH Our Three were writing the script.

interestingly got his big Hollywood break the same way PJ and Fran did...a Screenplay Oscar nomination (PJ for Heavenly Creatures, GDT last yr for Pan's Labyrinth.) Of course GDT has been around Hollywood for a while but if this is true people will REALLY be talking about a "major Breakthrough for his career" now.

I think we'd all better wish him the best b/c he's gonna need it. He has no idea what is in store ahead ("heaven" is MURDEROUSLY hard work, Senor!)

no announcement but...

I 'know' Doug Adams well enough that I don't think he'd be hinting in this direction on his blog without strong progress behind the scenes. Doug is very good at not giving news when he can't and then hinting wickedly at it when it's close to happening but he isn't the one to make the official announcement.

In fact, judging from his past behavior, I would predict an announcement in the next day or two. And I'm not one to get caught up in speculation and rumor.

There is a lot of buzz in the Tolkien community with the news yesterday that Del Toro was in ‘talks’ to direct the two ‘Hobbit’ films. Unfortunately a majority of the buzz is a case of bad reporting - as many have taken the title from the Hollywood Reporter article (’Del Toro doubles up for ‘Hobbit”) as an official announcement. However, read the first sentence and we see he is not confirmed, only in ‘talks.’ Now another rumor has surfaced that Del Toro has verbally confirmed he will be directing both films during a screening of his new movie ‘The Orphanage.’ This news has surfaced on a French Tolkien website, which may be another case of lost in translation! So is it Del Toro or What? We don’t know - but we’re working hard to find out. If anything has been officially said by Del Toro we probably can expect announcement pretty soon! Latest from "MarketSaw"

Seems that Jim from MarketSaw is also now starting to believe that GDT will be involved in at least one of the two Hobbit movies, though from his sources he is stressing that nothing has been confirmed at all. Again, this site seems to hold some weight based on the accuracy of his previoius predictions. I still hope that PJ ends up directing both films. However, as long as PJ exerts a strong hand of control over it, this might end up being very interesting.

The crossroads

I have my doubt's about this director. If he was unable to read Lotr (which of itself is not bad, just means it wasn't interesting or appealing to him for some reason) then he does not know M-E and 'The Hobbits' place in it. His only clear path will be to follow the Hobbit very closely. I do not rule out beginner's luck and a conversion (to Tolkien Geek) on the road to Damascas, but I think that unlikely to work.

When he come to the crossroads he will have to choose one path. Tolkien's, PJ's, His own, or NL/MGM. By the direction he goes we will know where he's headed.

ANd you now how furious I still am about the deletion of much of Gandalf's magic

It was wrong. If it happens in the Hobbit it could well wreck it. How else do the dwarves escape the Goblins? If it is some contrived scheme that deletes Gandalf's awesome display. . . I'll be ready to set of my own brand of wizardry!Mad

Play up the historical. . . play down the fantasy. . .as much as I loved the majority of the films, that was pure bull-crap. FrownThe only one who had his magic scaled back was Gandalf, the one who uses, possibly the MOST magic in the books.MadShockedMad

Sauron is a HUGE FLAMING EYE atop a tower, looking like a grim lighthouse. Nothing overtly supernatural about that.Crazy And Arwen comes off as a very skilled elf-witch, her calling down of the river and its horse-waves outshining just about every other act of sorcery in film one. . . except maybe for the giant storm that Saruman conjured. MadOh yes, and the MEGA fire-ball that Saruman shoots from his staff in extended ROTK. The end result? Gandalf The Gray, who was a great and powerful Wizard long before his fall and reincarnation, came off looking far less potent as a Wizard than he was and than he should havePirate. I have heard the comments and comparisons from film fans who were not book fans first. I have had to read too many passages from the book, and re-enact too many scenes to prove the point that Gandalf could indeed create mighty Wizardry. MadClearly, it is one of the few things about the films that I am still not happy. . . nay, still rather angry about.

The Hobbit is the perfect opportunity to fix it. Not overdue it mind you, but to reveal the full amazing splendour of Gandalf's magic properly as it is written, from the pillar of blue smoke to the sparks that burn the flesh of the Great Goblin and his guards. MadIf The Witch King can get a turquoise signal fire the height of a tower to spring up from Minas Morgul and not make the films seem TOO fantastical, than certainly the Great Wizard Gandalf the Grey can blast a few goblins out of their cave.Angelic

And maybe in the bridge film, as part of an escape from Dol Guldur sequence (the Nazgul can move around from time to time, they were not chained to Morgul Vale after all) we can see a version of his Battle with The Nine atop Amon Sul, when he lit the hill with such fury that Aragorn and The Hobbits saw it from miles off, "like lightning that leaps up from the hill-tops."

I apologize. A particualr concern of mine was just touched, and it made me upset enough to go off on tangent. *deeply inhaling. . . exhaling. . .* Ahhh. I am better now. AngelicLet us proceed. . . What were we saying?Evil

Exec Producers Power

As someone who has worked in the Industry let me just say that the Executive Producer of a film has almost total creative control. The EP outranks just about everybody including the Director. They are usually the ones who hire the director.

A lot of people have been saying that if PJ doesn't direct he will have no "creative control", but that is just not true. If he is the executive producer he will have complete control of the look, feel, and quality of the film. If he doesn't like what a director, or actor, or production artist is doing he can fire them and hire someone who will do his way.

So, even though I would love to see PJ direct, I'm not disapointed to see him as the Executive Producer...the Hobbit is in safe hands.

So... the French fan site posts again...

Posting an interview with Del Toro with an apparently more formal French site:

http://www.dvdrama.com/...toro-nous-repond.php

Quote

Translation:

Passing through Paris, for the advertising of Juan Antonio Bayona's The Orphanage, that Del Toro produced, the mexican director answered our questions with his legendary amability and good humor:

"Film The Hobbit? That will be happening!" he tells us with a large smile on his face. " There are still several details to define, but I hope that will be happening! They'd be two films that will open around 2011 and 2012."

Suddendly, his other projects seem postponed, notably the realization of the last chapter of the Harry Potter saga: "I don't know how that will turn out, but The Hobbit will keep me busy for 4 years, and I doubt Warner will wait that long to end up Harry Potter!"

So there! 2011 and 2012? Different from 2010 and 2011 we had heard of!

This interview sounds much more feasible, as his statement is relatively moderate, and he's not confirming anything.

Let it be heard! We want Jackson to direct The Hobbit!

Oh, I don't know. . .

I think the baby eater in Pan's Labyrinth was extremely scary and extremely intent on making someone his victim rather than being a victim himself.

Del Toro has some fantastic stuff in his head. I'm looking forward to seeing what he comes up with.

From a seasoned ranter....

go ahead and rant, Ainu! Bucky tells me not to stop "blathering" or "going ballistic" my pet phrase, when some Hollywood industry perfidy is perpetrated. As Bucky has told me, "Let that geek flag fly!"Cool

Well, with Del Toro at the helm, tou should be in for a treat. Have you seen his work, esp. Pan's Labyrinth? HE is not afraid of magic--in fact, just the opposite.

Maybe that was one of the MANY reason PJ paased up directing this--he knew that vivid depictions of magic were unavoidable with this one, and it would spoil his ME adaptation experience. :)

The "pants" game

started on some Star Wars message boards. You play the game by substituting "pants" at key points in the text of the books, or the dialogue of the movie. Of course, there's an underlying double-meaning because in the UK "pants" has a different meaning than in the US (pants are underwear in the UK).

One time we had a hilarious thread substituting "peas" instead of "pants".

Each cloak was fastened about the neck with a brooch like a green leaf veined with silver.
`Are these magic cloaks?' asked Pippin, looking at them with wonder.
`I do not know what you mean by that,' answered the leader of the Elves.
