Any Actual Places that Remind You of Middle Earth?....

Have you traveled to, or seen images of, exotic places (not named New Zealand) that have inspired you to visualize a particular place from Middle Earth?

Here are three locations that come to mind:

Elvenking's Halls/Menegroth (Vietnam): http://www.dailymail.co.uk/...st-cave-Vietnam.html & http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/...om-shrinking-714.jpg
(btw - it goes without saying - this cave is absolutely stunning....)

Hobbiton (Switzerland): http://inthralld.com/...ampaign=hexagram.com

Mordor (Ethiopia): http://www.slate.com/..._two_lava_lakes.html

Any other actual places that remind you of Lake-town?, Bree?, the Grey Havens?, Edoras?, Lorien?, Rivendell, Tumunzahar?, Thangorodrim?....

Wow

that cave in Vietnam is amazing! I can totally picture some Woodland Elves living there! And those hobbit houses in Switzerland are so cool!

I'd say the Cascade Mountains, that run from British Columbia, through Washington, Oregon and into California, make pretty good Misty Mountains:

Those pictures are beautiful!

The picture of the volcano in the Philippines is breathtaking! Almost too good to be real; like an artist's rendering of Mt. Doom.

But I have to say the thing that gave me goosebumps was you sig line picture. The Nine Kings .... *shiver*

Now *that* one is reeeeaaaaalllly creepy

Makes you wonder...

Tolkien would have been 18 and was at school in 1910, specifically, I believe, King Edward's School in Birmingham. Would he have seen this photo in the newspaper do you think? Quite a powerful picture... nine kings... nine riders... all that black mourning crepe... hmmmmm...

Sometimes my own backyard!

I live in a fairly wooded area and, especially in the autumn some of the nearby areas remind me of Middle Earth. Also, some of the trees in my yard (I think they may be poplar trees) turned a brilliant golden yellow this year and it reminded me of Legolas' description of Lothlorien: "That is the fairest of all the dwellings of my people. There are no trees like the trees of that land. For in the autumn their leaves fall not, but turn to gold. Not till the spring and the new green opens do they fall, and then the boughs are laden with yellow flowers; and the floor of the wood is golden, and golden is the roof, and its pillars are of silver, for the bark of the trees is smooth and grey."

I took lots of leaf pictures this year and I was going share one of the yellow leaves but I noticed the posting guidelines said pictures can be no bigger than like, 45k and short of cropping it till it's so small you can't see it, I can't seem to get it that small. Oh well.Unsure

I agree!

Sometimes my yard (all 50 acres of it) can be transformed into the barrow downs when it is foggy and the forest could be part of the old forest after a hard rain or even Lothlorien in the fall with the golden leaves carpeting the floor. There are several large hilly fields nearby where I go riding that look a bit like the rolling plains of Rohan. It just goes to show you that Middle Earth is all around you!

When we're out walking around our home, we can see Ben Lomond in the distance.

Those hills remind me a little of Middle-Earth.

I have also been further up North to Loch Tay, where I saw the reconstructed Crannog. The landscape around there is very beautiful, and does remind me greatly of Middle-Earth. Smile

If you Google "Hanging Lake" Colorado

You'll SEE the Forbidden Pool..
It's a Famous hike near Glenwood Springs right off 1-70

Bomby could spend Days posting shots from
Colorado...Like The Gore Range East of Vail
Or Mount Holy Cross (Lonely Mountain?)
And many more..
Growing up at the Foot of Pikes Peak & skiing
Most of 26 ski resorts
MiddleEarth was everywhere..

At one early point
Bomby thought they would shoot it here.

And in addition to all the locations in the mountains, I could picture Rohan in the grasslands in the southeast corner of the state.

That is most commendable, Kim.

I really hope you can travel here - it's not New Zealand but our landscape of the highlands takes me a step closer to the other end of the world.
I'd recommend (if you have not done so already) watching Diseny's "Brave" [at the start of the film and throughout it shows different Scottish landscapes] Wink

I must confess myself that I would sometimes like to visit the USA and learn more about Americans. Smile

I would love to

Most of my family ancestry is English/Scottish/Welsh, so I would love to visit all of those countries. I finally got the chance to go to England earlier this year, but was only there long enough to go to London and Bath (which were great of course). And yes, I have seen Brave, as well as various other movies and books that take place in Scotland, which of course makes me want to visit all the more!

I think we need to set up a TORn cultural exchange program - you come visit me in my country, I'll come visit you in yours. Smile

Ah, Bath... *sighs at the very thought of the city*

Such an inspiring place - I went there a few years ago and visited Glastonbury. Such a naïeve little girl I had been... I now realise I take loads of things for granted (I never realised just how many people wanted to come to Scotland because of its history and fabulous landscapes until going online and learning about it in school).

And to think I have never actually been to London after all these years... Laugh

Sigh indeed

Yeah, I just had to see Bath after reading about it in Jane Austen novels and seeing it in various movies. Unfortunately, I could only squeeze in a day trip, so didn't have a lot of time to explore, but I'm so glad I went. I did manage to hit most of the big touristy places in London, which again was just so cool after reading about them for years/seeing in movies etc. It was pretty mind-blowing to be in places 1000 years old like the Tower - the town I live in just celebrated its 100th anniversary. Smile

The thing about Scotland that appeals to me (besides my family history) is that it's actually very similar to where I live. The nearby mountains here are very similar to the pictures you posted. And Scottish accents are my favorite. Sly

The Nine

Some months back, there was an item of English archaeology news which was downright spooky:
"A rather extravagant *nine* previously unknown crypts have been found underneath Coventry's medieval Cathedral remains... It is thought they may have been burial vaults for noble families."
Did they find any Morgul blades, I wonder?

My Property

Backs onto a large 500 acre Property, which is pretty much just paddock, and grazing land for cows. That on its own reminds me of the plains of Rohan a lot. Plus to add to the picture, we have the Blue mountains (in Sydney, not Eriador) that pretty much surround the horizon behind these paddocks, and when the sun sets behind them, and the sky is red above them, it looks a lot like mordor. The view is almost a replica of the one from TTT when Gandalf says "The battle of helms deep is over, the battle for middle earth is about to begin" I will add pictures to see what u think

"And do you really think, Thorin Oakenshield, that Bolg will have the slightest symphony for you? After he watched you hack his fathers hand off, so ruthlessly in Moria. Azogs defeat has brought nothing to you, only refuelled hate of his kin, upon yours"

The highlands of Scotland

Have often reminded me of the Misty Mountains when I visit. Though I am aware that there are other more impressive mountain ranges in the world, but the Highlands are an impressive range in themselves.
